According to my DSHS regional field reps if it expires on 03/09 that is the

first day of March. Only differs when an exact specific date is on the drug.

example 3/31/09.

According to what was published in the Texas EMS Magazine :

* Date expressed as mm/yyyy. This drug can be held until the

last day of the respective month;

* Date expressed as I mm/yyyy. If you see a date with a I in

front of the month, the drug expires on the first day of the respective

month and must be pulled no later than the first day of that month.

I posed a similar question about 2 years ago and was told just the opposite...

They say that if a month and year is listed with no specific date then it is

good till the last day of the month. The majority of drugs that have a specific

date are listed as the 1st (03-01-09) as opposed to the 31st, which made the

manufacturers explanation valid.

I too would like to see something in writing. Great question!

I have the understanding of the opposite, that the drug is " good "

until the month on those listed as xx/yy. That is basically the

reason why I am trying to locate the specific document that states

what is to be followed.

Our pharmacuetical distributor states that the medications are " good "

until the end of the month unless specifically identified, but they

could not provide this in writing either.

Does the drug medication really " expire " on that date rendering it useless?

For instance you order your Rx from the pharmacy today and it has a year

expiration on the bottle. How long has it been sitting on the pharmacy shelf?

That's really the crux of the problem. We climate control our drugs but who

knows how long it sat in a warehouse or how hot it got in the UPS truck before

we received it. Plus I have never seen any reliable data that says how

adulterated the drugs got at what temp and how many cycles. I do believe we

should control our drugs but who's to say when it went " bad " .

drug pertaining to their specified expiration date.

Our department follows the recommendation of the FDA; eventhough, we

pull our drugs at least one month prior to expiration for the sake of

preventing overlooking any expired medications.
