I love swim central. Not only for the swimming lessons for our kids that don't yet know how to swim, but also for our sensory children. My son does extremely well in the water, and he is a very experienced swimmer. However the 2 weeks in swim central provides him with a fantastic opportunity for sensory input and an informal water therapy as well as an increase in his self confidence to show off his strong point of swimming. It is his time to shine every year! If the schools are considering canceling this great service bc it is too taxing on the teachers they should open an opportunity for parent volunteers to assist. I hope our school does not cancel swim central.Sent from my iPhone

Hi Everybody,This email is for anyone who has children at Sawgrass Elementary in the PreK, K or Cluster classrooms. The principal has decided to cancel Swim Central, a free program for all PreK, PLACE, K and cluster classes. It costs the parents nothing and the school nothing. It's an opportunity for our children to overcome their fear in the water and learn to swim. Now granted, it's only two weeks and they won't be pro swimmers when they're done. But it's an opportunity that shouldn't be passed up. The administration made this decision without contacting parents and asking for our feedback. The claim is that it was canceled because the teachers said the children were crying because the water was cold because it was March. They didn't go in March, they went in May and the pool was 86 degrees. Most likely she got an overwhelming amount of teacher complaints because it has to be a very difficult two weeks for them, with busing and changing all the kids. Although I feel for t hem, I still don't feel that's a good enough excuse. A 7-year-old boy drowned in his pool this weekend. I want Swim Central back. I'm writing an email to the principal and forwarding it to Grigull and Desmond Blackburn, 's in charge of Autism for the county and Dr. Blackburn is the Area Superintendent for our school. If you feel the same way, please send emails! I'm posting this because I know they're keeping it quiet, no parents know yet and hardly any teachers know yet! But I've been told that if she cancels for this year, it will be very difficult for her to get back on the schedule again, which could affect children for years to come.Thanks!gary.grigull@...desmond.blackburn@...sherry.rose@...=

I am the proud dad of an autistic child at Sawgrass Elementary and this program made her sick. The water was extremely cold and she was sick for weeks. We love and support swimming lessons, but this is why we provide them for our daughter at home (where we have a heater) and during the summer. She receives swimming therapy from qualified professionals after school and/or during the weekends. By the way there is a lot of misinformation and inaccurate information being passed around. The program has not been cancelled, but my family will not be using this program this year. The school has always had the best interest of all the children, especially our children with special needs. My daughter has been at this school since she was 3 and my wife works

there. We couldn't be happier with the education and the support we have received from all staff members. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share an accurate point of view. The program was canceled last week and then partially reinstated yesterday afternoon by the principal after there were complaints according to the county. If the school does not reinstate all children, including Kindergarten, then no one will be able to enjoy this service. Every parent has the right to keep their child from using the service if they find it necessary, as you do. And I completely respect your decision. All that we ask is that the rest of us have the right to utilize this program for our children, those of us who had an amazing experience last year with the very experienced professionals at Baby Otter Swim School.

Hello,Is this a mandatory program for all matriculated students? If not, and a family could opt out, I would still fight for it to continue in favor of the students that did benefit from it.Sent from a's iPhone

No, it's not a mandatory program for schools or students. It's simply a free program offered to the schools by Broward County. The goal is to offer free swim lessons for two weeks out of the year to Pre K, Kindergarten and Cluster students, with the hope of saving lives in the future. A 7-year-old child drowned in Oakland Park this past weekend in a swimming pool. The county knows that not everyone has a heated swimming pool in their backyard and the money to pay someone to teach their children to swim in it. Swimming lessons can also be very expensive and not everyone falls into the "needy enough" category in order to receive scholarships. So for a lot of children, Swim Central is the only swim program that they get access to, which is why I am fighting for it.

Hello,

Is this a mandatory program for all matriculated students?

If not, and a family could opt out, I would still fight for it to continue in favor of the students that did benefit from it.
