Guest guest
We did genetic testing on my 4yo daughter through a company called 23 And Me and I just got an email update stating that she has a " typical " risk for Hashimotos. Below is a blurb from 23 And Me sighting genetic research. This seems to be very new research, since I'm reading The Language Of Life by Francis S. (copyright 2010) and it says " While hypothyroidism is generally not due to a single genetic cause, early detection is ciritcal. " ) A 2005 study of 165 Caucasian patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and 2,064 controls found that a variant (rs2476601) in the PTPN22 gene is associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Each copy of the A allele at this position was associated with 1.7 times increased odds of developing Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This SNP is also part of the 23andMe Rheumatoid Arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes reports. So most of us have a genetic predisposition for Hashis, combined with environmental exposure (flouride, chlorine, bromine, etc.), something we've know all along, eh ;-)?! Just nice to see science catching up. Best, Debra in CA
