Special Education Parent Workshop

Presented

by: Cammarata, Attorney at Law

“Getting to the

“I†in IEPâ€

The

Federal Government mandates in the Individual Education Improvement

Act that children with disabilities who require special education be

provided with an Individualized Education Program. Each

school school year is a precious time in your child's life. It is

important to act now to protect his/her future.

While

extremely comprehensive, this workshop is taught in a very basic

manner in order to provide practical information that parents can

easily apply to their unique circumstances.

TOPICS

TO BE COVERED

Disabled

children are to be taught in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

among non-disabled peers to the maximum extent possible. LRE is a

right, not a privilege. What must the school do to meet your child's

needs in the LRE?

Understanding

the IEP document and how to write an appropriate IEP for your child.

How

can a parent identify their child's “unique needs†to

write an appropriate IEP?

What is the School District's

responsibility in addressing a child's behaviors that interfere with

learning? What does IDEIA and Section 504 provide? Can a disabled

child be disciplined for behaviors related to their disability?

-Suspensions

-Referrals

-Calls from school

-FBAs/Behavior Plans

-Restraint and Seclusion

What protections and procedural

safeguards does IDEIA and Section 504 provide when things go wrong?

A brief “mock†IEP

meeting will take place at the end of the workshop. *Some amazing

parent actors will participate!
