Tina,

EBV is nothing new. It is the virus that causes mononucleosis usually in adolescents or young adults. The CDC estimates that around 95% of all adults in the US have been exposed to EBV. It's one of the herpes viruses and in that sense is related to the virus that causes a cold sore and the virus that causes chicken pox.

There are theories that exposure to EBV can be a trigger for things like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, assorted auto-immune dieases even MS. They are studying this now but it will be probably take a long time for them to figure this all out.

For the average healthy individual EBV poses no greater risk than the common cold. Most people who get it have absolutely no symptoms and never know they've had it!

Hi Peggy,The Epstein Barr Virus must be getting around. I never heard of it until a few weeks ago when my daughter's best friend, and sister-in-law, , was diagnosed with it. She had been hospitalized for about a week and they said she also had Mono. was so terribly sick. I don't know if she had a rash or not, but I know they were very worried about her. She lost about 20 pounds and that was a lot of weight for a girl of only about 130 anyway. She is only 21 years old and she is a college student. From what I've been told she has missed practically this whole semester. I saw her for teh first time last Monday while I was visiting (my daughter). I couldn't believe how fragile she still looked. I was very careful to keep my distance from her, but I did spend the night in the same house! I am still recovering from another bout with pneumonia and still on Prednisone, so I know how

careful I have to be. I hope your granddaughter' s recovery is quick and that you get to see her soon. Actually most of the time when you hear about the Epstein Barr Virus its

just what we always called mononucleosis.

Around 95% of us get EBV during our lives. When it occurs as a child we

generally don't detect it versus any other illness. However, when it

occurs during adolescence or young adulthood as the girls you have both

mentioned, it causes infectious mononucleosis 35-50% of the time.

The virus is normally transmitted only through saliva, not through the

air. Therefore, avoiding it is not generally an issue. Furthermore,

since most healthy people also carry the virus you can get it from most

anyone. Healthy people can spread the virus intermittently for life.

Therefore, transmission of the virus is generally impossible to prevent.

There is no real treatment for infectious mononucleosis although a few

days of steroids is sometimes used just to reduce swelling. It generally

lasts no more than four months.

So, what we thought is new is really quite old. I remember mono

throughout my high school and college. It was known then as the " kissing

disease " . The other way it was considered to be spread then was the

sharing of drinks. Now, we have knowledge of the underlying virus, EBV.

I'm sure the studies underway are to determine if EBV is the cause of

other things including any relationship to PF.

Here is the link for EBV information:

Peggy,

I wasn't lucky either. I had it when I was in high school and I missed about a month of school. I never had the rash that she's having. You said the doctor mentioned she had a particularly severe case. Poor Amber, she can't get a break!
