Guest guest
Lissette, I have a friend in Boca whose son volunteers at the local hospital. He helps deliver trays to patients, or he helps in the billing office by filing and/or shredding documents for the staff. I have another friend whose daughter volunteers at the thrift store of a local church in Ft. Lauderdale. She puts the items on the shelves and sometimes helps at the cash register. If you are willing to drive him to various locations or if he will have his driver's license in time to do it, Meals on Wheels is always looking for help. Some libraries like the city of Oakland Park, Wilton Manors library, or Galt Ocean reading room like to have volunteers to put out the books for sale or to shelve materials. I have a friend whose son is somewhat limited, and last year he volunteered in a local doctor's office. When a patient would leave, he would change the paper on the table and put the used gowns in the laundry basket. He also did small chores like wiping out the microwave in the lounge and straightening magazines. At the end of the summer the staff got together and gave him a gift card to Toys R Us. This was in a small town in Ohio, so I don't know if a doctor in FL would be as receptive to the idea. You might even consider checking with Center for Independant Living about their High School/High Tech program. They get kids jobs for the summer that are fun and pay a small salary. My son worked at a car alarm and tire store for one summer. I hope your son will find a really great opportunity this summer. Guest guest
Dear Lissette and all of our other special friends,You may want to look into the Miami Dolphins "Special Teams". They organize volunteers for various events throughout South FLorida and might be an excellent way for you to plan his and your volunteer work. They are good people and fyi, are the people who organize the volunteers for the Autism Walk (At Dolphins Stadium), which raises a lot of money for our community. Have fun!! s Mahler To: deniseslist <sList > Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2012 12:51 AM Subject: Looking for volunteer opportunities for my special needs teen this summer Hi, just wondering if anyone knows of any volunteer opportunities for teens with special needs in South Florida.
