Dear sList@..., Summer allowed us time to tap further into our creative energies and now we are introducing a bunch of new work. As Social Thinking grows up, Pam, Steph and I are developing better ways to help our community zoom in to focus more specifically on the treatment needs of our students in inclusive classrooms. We are about to premiere new checklists and other worksheets to help guide professionals through the task of better assessing their students' social-academic needs. We will be introducing this work to the public in Portland, Oregon on October 22nd and 23rd and then again in San Francisco in late January. Also in Portland, on October 24th three of my colleagues, Tarshis, Kari Palmer, and Hendrix, are presenting their early learners curriculum which our public has been asking us for, for years! This dynamic team will present their work again in San Francisco in late January. The early learners curriculum, which integrates Social Thinking into fully illustrated stories, songs and lesson plans for 4-7 year olds, is called The Incredible Flexible You, and will be available at the beginning of 2013. To address the topic of preschool inclusion for kids with social learning challenges, I invited Social Thinking Training and Speakers Collaborative members Tarshis and Debbie Meringolo to write a blog with me on the topic based on a question sent to us. We are not ignoring those on the east coast - Florida, we are coming your way in December! We have sold out most of our conferences in Boston but have just a few spaces left in my workshop on developing executive functioning strategies to teach students how to better manage their homework (Oct 19th). You would be surprised by how we can actually make this topic interesting! Read below for more details on all of the above! New Early Learning Conference Day Addresses how to Integrate Social Thinking Strategies into the Classroom! This new conference day will be featured in Portland, OR (October 24). The presenters have teamed up with to develop Social Thinking teaching plans for our young learners. This workshop introduces professionals and parents to the many important facets of development that underlie social learning in preschool and early elementary aged children. Using the curriculum The Incredible Flexible You, to be published in early 2013, we introduce core Social Thinking concepts to help our early learners better understand what it means to work as part of a group, think about others, share an imagination as well as many other lessons to help them better learn to relate to others. Also make sure to check out our two new conference days in Portland on October 22-23 which take a deeper look at how to understand and design strategy-based Social Thinking lessons for our more concrete and literal learners versus those with more nuanced based issues! -Click here to learn more about these conferences and to register!- The Incredible Flexible You! Based on a question sent to us from a member of our community, I developed a response and then asked my colleagues, Tarshis and Debbie Meringolo, to contribute their thoughts on this topic as they are preschool specialists and I am not. We know this is a tricky subject; your experience may be different from ours, as well as your opinion. It is important we discuss all different points of view related to inclusion-based education. -Click here to read the rest of this blog- Featured Product of the Month! Boston sure does love Social Thinking and we've already sold out almost all of our Boston conferences for this fall! Fortunately, we still have one day open with a few spaces left. On October 19th, I will focus on executive functioning skills and present practical strategies to tackle homework and other deadline based tasks. This conference is great for parents and professionals who work with students that struggle with executive functioning and organizational skills. Many have embraced this information and used it widely, even in their regular education classrooms. This workshop is rarely given and gets rave reviews! -Click here to learn more and to register!- Social Thinking's Coming to Orlando, FL! For the first time, the Social Thinking team and I are coming to the Orlando, FL area, December 4th-5th, 2012. Join us for two inspiring and practical days! On the first day I break down one of the fundamental concepts of Social Thinking, the ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition. This model helps to demonstrate how social processing difficulties impact not only social skills but also a student's ability to succeed in school. On the second day I discuss my Informal Dynamic Social Thinking Assessment as well as core treatment strategies to use at both home and school. Make sure to register before the early bird deadline expires! -Click here to learn more and to register!- Wow, there is so much to think about as we integrate information from the Common Core Standards into our work and share that new thinking with our community around the USA. We are really happy to see a Common Core Standard that addresses Speaking and Listening; this helps acknowledge that social thinking and related social skills are part of the classroom experience. This concept is part of the information we will be introducing in our new workshop days (Portland, San Francisco) as we zoom in to explode the code of social knowledge and behavior as it relates to classroom learning as well as lifelong learning, and talk about how we can apply this information to better define our treatment pathways. We are enjoying this learning process and hope to be finding more ways to share this information with you in the future if you can't make it to one of our conferences. Hope your fall is going well! P.S. Did you know October is National Bullying Prevention Month? Those with social learning challenges are at higher risk for being bullied and also at higher risk for perpetuating bullying. Strategies to help create a culture on campus that discourages bullying are being taught as we encourage students to be "Upstanders." Upstanders are not bystanders in that they take on a role to say "no" to bullying as part of a team or school wide effort, and they have strategies to stand up to the bullying they are observing. For instance, if students are not comfortable challenging the bully, the Upstanders can take their information to an adult who can help. Learn more by Googling this concept or check out: http://www.schoolclimate.org/bullybust/parents/upstander_behavior. Social Thinking strategies can also be used to help teach Upstanders how to mentor/coach their peers who can benefit from such direct feedback in social situations.
