Guest guest
Is this Pittsburg, PA or Pittsburgh, TX? It really doesn't matter. The damage done by this failure of the system will have far reaching effects if it's broadcast widely. We should hope is that this doesn't go " viral. " Any time an incident suggests incompetence or worse, conscious callousness to human needs, one just needs to get out the checkbook and let the plaintiff fill in the numbers. This is the sort of incident that makes plaintiff's lawyers salivate. Here we have a system that's failed a customer badly if one believes the story (and that's a stretch sometimes) , and one supposes that there are some deep pockets available. The jury appeal of a claim like this is huge. Who will the jury feel sorry for? The medics who refused to go get the patient and required him to walk to them? Or the family of the person who died? And look for a maximum verdict for pain and suffering. GG From: THEDUDMAN@... Subject: Thoughts??? Guest guest
Um, anyone here ever read a newspaper or television account of a call they ran, and wondered if the reporter was at the same scene they were? Rarely, if ever, do media reports reflect the entire story, nor are they very accurate about the facts they do report. I'm reserving judgment here until more information comes to light. wegandy1938 wrote: > Is this Pittsburg, PA or Pittsburgh, TX? > > It really doesn't matter. Guest guest
Newspaper and TV reporters are entry level folks. They have little training, not much education, and an agenda that's different from ours. They need to create excitement with visual and auditory images. We take what we get. They do the best they can. We make a mistake when we blast them and insult them, because they always have the last word, the videotape of the incident. GG Subject: Re: Thoughts??? Guest guest
While I certainly agree that the news media is often far from accurate in their reporting, it does appear that city officials confirm the news version of the story in this case. Access problems can definitely cause extreme delays. But I have a hard time understanding how they simply cancelled the response over it. I'm betting that if the victim had reported to have been shot, or the house was on fire, they would have found a way to get there, access problems be damned. I am not a big supporter of the FD " first responder " concept, after all these years. It often creates more problems than it solves, as well as perpetuating the problem it was established to address in the first place. However, if a fire truck could make it to that residence where an ambulance could not, then that step definitely should have been taken. This is just like if someone has fallen off a cliff, or is trapped in a confined space. We don't just cavalierly blow it off and say, " sorry, we can't get to it. " We adapt, improvise, and use our heads to come up with solutions. I really just don't see any way of explaining this one away. It appears to be a serious failure on the part of the system on many levels. Rob

Guest guest
I was in Pittsburgh yesterday on a fixed wing medical transport and this is a hot topic up there. I can see a delayed response due to the weather, but just to cancel the call because the patient can't walk to the truck is unacceptable. I agree with Rob, we don't just quit because we can't get there. It is our jobs as Firefighters and Paramedics to find a way to make it work. Were not allowed to take the easy way out. The crew that transported us pretty much told us the same story as the article in the paper. It took us an hour and 15mins to go 12 miles yesterday in traffic and less than stellar road conditions. There were 4 lanes streets down to 2 lanes due to they have no where to push the snow. I saw several residential side streets that haven't even been plowed. The crew that transported us said that the city was very unprepared for the storm and that it pretty much paralyzed the city. From what I gathered from the crew that transported us Pittsburgh uses the 3 model system like Austin. Police, Fire, and EMS are all seperate departments up there. Guest guest
Yeah, one or two...or three...... Â I prefer to wait until it hits the Enquirer, THEN I can bank on it. Guest guest
In reference to the article I would say these were some very lazy medics who didn't want to get out in the cold and carry their equipment a few blocks. I don't know if these were volunteers, paid, contract or fire department but they failed to follow the first rule of medicine; " Do no harm. " By refusing to attempt to get to the patient and do an assessment they did not follow this rule. Unfortunately EMS is full of these types and I hope as EMS raises the bar in the next few years we begin to either change attitudes or get rid of them. Of course there will always be a few bad apples somewhere and they will be the ones who get the publicity while the ones who are working hard and saving lives are ignored. > > Thoughts from the group? > > http://www.postgazette.com/pg/10048/1036403-53.stm > > Dudley > > " EMS does not save lives.
