I just had a 2 hr. wait to see a urologist for blood in my urine. His nurse first checked it and said the dip test showed signs of blood, but no infection. When he came in the room, he minimized it and said there ws no blood and no cause for concern. But he did give me the name of a physical therapist at a different facility. When I mentioned a nerve block, I told him the pain dr. would do it on one side only. He said he would defer to this physician. He also mentioned TENS and said to call him if I wanted to pursue that avenue. What could blood in the urine mean? Is it worth getting a 2nd opinion? --msb

Hi,

Blood in the urine is very simple to test for and lots

of people have it. My mother had it--a lot of blood

for many years and very visable--I have it--a little

blood that I can't see myself but the doctors can. I

also have protein in it. (ugh!)

We both had gluten sensitivity which is believed to

cause IgA nephropathy (kidney failure from autoimmune

attacks on the kidney). Since you have just discovered

this you can have a headstart in reading about this

stuff. Your urologist may want to test you every year

for cancer of the urinary tract if the blood

increases. A lot of people have this and if you are

lucky you will never know the cause. When you have

your yearly blood tests (if you regularly go to the

doc) be sure to notice the part on kidney function

tests (creatine and something else). Also when you

start getting protein in the urine is when you can be

further alerted that there is something nasty going

on.

Hopefully you may never have a problem with it.

Although my mother had lots of blood for many years

and lots of bladder infections, she lived to a ripe

old age with no further problem.

In other words, don't worry, it may be almost nothing,

but watch it. They xray my kidneys every year and give

me the cancer check by blood test.

Sue,

Blood in the urine can mean infection as well as kidney stones

(I have had one since 2004 according to the CT Scan I had at

that time).

I would recommend that you ask your primary care physician if

they will do a CT Scan of the abdomen and pelvis. If there is a

kidney stone there it will show up on the thest.

Kristy :)
