DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the DMF WalkAbout Autism will have several sensory-friendly Chill Zones located in strategic locations throughout Sun Life Stadium? These Chill Zones are places you can visit if you are an adult with autism or if you are a caregiver with a child or teen who just needs a little break from all the excitement on WalkAbout day (January 26, 2013).

Additionally, to prepare for the actual day of the event, we will be posting useful visual supports online prior to the event. To join in the fun, visit www.dmfwalkaboutautism.org today and form your school, corporate or family team.

GPALS: Grandparents Assisting

and Lending Support

Our support group for grandparents is facilitated by Dr. Alessandri, the director of UM-NSU CARD. If you are an interested grandparent, please join us. We meet on the second Tuesday of every month.

Broward Social GAIN:

Holiday Potluck

Social GAIN (Social Group for Aspies to Interact and Network) is a support and activity group for high-functioning adults on the autism spectrum. All first-time attendees must arrange to meet with one of the group facilitators before the meeting. Bring a dish for the potluck if you can!

Autism Intensive Communication Academy: Application for 2013-2014

This special education option, offered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, is designed for non-verbal children with significant developmental delays. MDCPS has three Academy Sites: Blue Lakes Elementary School, Redondo Elementary School, and Gratigny Elementary School.

These programs are technology-rich, have a very low student-to-teacher ratio, and are highly targeted at supporting the development of communication skills.

Applications are due by January 15, 2013 for the 2013-2014 school year.

Winter Learning Series

We are offering several autism-related workshops throughout December, January, and February. This week, we will have a presentation on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This training will explain the different sections of the IEP. Understanding the document and preparing for the meeting are the keys to success!

As winter break is the longest break throughout the school year, we believe that parents should take steps to keep their children in active, engaging, and social environments to prevent disruption of the progress they have achieved in school. As such, STARS will be opening its doors for families during the holiday season.

(except Christmas Day and New Year's Day)

Sibshops: Presented by JAFCO

Sibshops are interactive workshops for typical siblings of children with developmental disabilities. They provide siblings (ages 6-12) with opportunities for peer support within a safe, fun-filled, recreational context.

Autism Spectrum Assessment Clinic: Social Skills Group

Our state-of-the-art 9-week social skills intervention program teaches children age-appropriate skills based on individualized needs. The unique parent group teaches parents how to foster generalization of their child's skills. Now accepting applicants for the Spring 2013 group!
