Guest guest
is, It's OK to be frightened, but do not PANIC. We have all weekend to help you learn what you need to know by Monday. And we will. Here are a couple of my favorite articles that will be relevant right now for you. The first is about the scan. This is the subject we have been debating here, starting a few days before you joined us. So you can also go the home page at Yahoo , and find the older posts. But...here is a great site with ACCURATE information. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/graves_disease/84431 http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/graves_disease/54427 http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/graves_disease/75480 Here is a past post from Elaine concerning the RAI scan, and it not being a useful tool. Though some do go through with it because of social pressure. Elaine is the author of 'Graves' Disease a Practical Guide'. It is available at most libraries. Once you see it, you will probably end up purchasing as it becomes the best reference material available. BTW...the profits go to thyroid research. She is not doing this to get rich. Anyway...here is that old post from Elaine. *** The blood tests measure how the thyroid is functioning, whether it's hyper or hypo. Please read this article which notes that the uptake is neither necessary nor desirable. You could still have the test if you want to establish a good relationship with your doctor, but you'd have this available if you want to show him current thought on the subject. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/433855 You probably have to sign but members hip is free. The article is called Management of Thyrotoxicosis by ph N. Fisher, MD *** -Pam L - oh...please read my signature..if I had stopped PTU at one year I would still be sick. 3 1/2 yr.Graves and TED, PTU, Remission due to education, SLOW reduction of PTU, improved lifestyle, excellent nutrition, herbs, and looking at the BIG picture ! Pills alone only fix symptoms. We must help our bodies to heal.

Guest guest
Oh shoot Jody.. I forgot about the white blood count and liver function tests ! is..some doctors do not do these before anti thyroid drugs are begun and it is yet another trick. Your liver and white blood count might be off right now due to Graves' itself. This is why you need a baseline reading BEFORE the drugs are started. Because if you turn out to be a tough customer, and silly enough to think that radioactive material might not be a good thing..and so many of those crazy hyper patients are freaked out by the idea...but you know they do not know anything about the subject...well...THEN the doctor can run the WBC and liver panel AFTER you have been over medicated like you are...and the test results will show the crazy patient that the DRUGS are killing them. SEE..it's right there in black and white ! To tell you the truth, I am surprised they haven't told you the itching is because you are allergic to the drugs. But sense they figure you are as good as cooked, they haven't had to pull that one yet. BTW...the extremely high dose of PTU is most likely adding to the normal itching from Graves' and once your dose goes down, it will stop. Jody...I love your 'play'. We see the same story over and over don't we. You know I would have written it word for word, exactly the same way you did, it is so common. They know which lines are the most likely to scare the daylights out of these poor crazy hyper people. ( 'daylights' was not my first choice of words...LOL ) OH... the new standard protocol for RAI is to resume the PTU several days after the RAI to further prevent the possibility of death by thyroid storm. That is why I finally started flipping out is. That and the prednisone NOT being done correctly. It just all adds up. PLEASE listen to Jody about the eye disease. That endo has no business treating your eyes. It is exactly what Jody says..it will mask symptoms from any eye doctor you see. But it will not be enough to make you feel better, or have any affect on the eyes at all in the long run. The only reason for this particular dose and time is RAI. is..I had severe eye disease, so I also know what I am talking about. The PTU is the drug I took, and it DID , in time, make my eyes go back in my head, the horrid pain stopped, the double and triple vision is gone, and I can once again read a newspaper without glasses. Funny...I thought I needed glasses long before Graves' . Turns out, it was pre full blown Graves' in my eyes for years before I was diagnosed. I am still wearing them for driving only, as that part seems better with glasses, but then I am the oldest one here, so that little bit of loss is no big deal. After all, the eye disease was so bad..I sure count myself as lucky. -Pam L- 'still waiting for the car guy...sheesh' -Pam L -

Guest guest
Hi is - What do you mean by the following? >>>> clap clap, whistle whistle. That was just great. I am taking that one to the bank. I was told on this sight to NOT have that scan done. To cancel and find another doc right away. I do intend to do just that, but am still having different suggestions made to me. Do you think I should have the scan done?<<<< I don't recall seeing anyone tell you NOT to cancel the scan. Was it on this message board? Chris
