My niece did this for a while and she is a typical child. She couldn't go to Disney or see characters anywhere or she would scream. She outgrew it over time.

My 7 year old daughter panics when she seems a person in a costume (Monkey Joe, Disney, characters at the zoo, Santa) It is extreme panic and fear and she wants to "go home" and cannot relax when she sees one. She screams and does not want to be held.

Any ideas why she feels this way and what I can do? We explain that a person is in the costume but it doesn't help. Thanks for any ideas. It seems the image overwhelms her to terror. Khat

I definitely suggest to play lots of Dress Up games with your daughter in front of a mirror so she can watch herself and you and friends dressed up ( in a non threatening way)...gradually you can consider masks or face paint so that she looks very different but she knows it's still her :) Also have her dress up her dolls or the family pet! This can help her make the association between real and DressUp! I wouldn't force her to be around characters if she has a severe negative reaction. Also note DressUp doesn't have to be any of the characters that she feels threatened by. This should be a fun, magical experience. Hope this helps!Keep us posted! Amar OTR/LWww. Start of with showing her pictures of the character. Have her touch the cards and learn there names. First motor then vocal. U can even give her her favorite treat as she looks at the flash cards. U always want to pair up something she is uncomfortable with or unfamiliar with something that she enjoys ;). Hope this helpsThe Melian girls
