Good morning, group:

1) My son, , will be graduation from High School this year and I am contemplating his attendance to a Technical College or other Higher Education??

Does anyone have any recommendations in Broward County? (A college that will accept a Special Diploma.) He likes animals, computers and is enrolled in a Culinary Program at Easter Seals, however, I think he would be good working in the Marine Industry as he loves the water also.

2) He is a high-functioning Autistic and we are supposed to meet with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to write a Plan (?) therefore, I would like to be as informed as possible about the process, what to expect, what can he expect to receive (i.e. how much money for schooling, transportations), obstacles anticipated, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful Spring Break!

First, I must tell you that my experience with Voc. Rehab., is that it was a

total waste of time and they did nothing to help my son who functions fairly

well. I sincerely hope that your experience will be better. They are extremely

UNLIKELY to pay for training or classes for your son to learn a trade/ job.

They may find him a job and train him, but he must accept whatever jobs they

find, which may not be in an area your son wants to work. I finally fired these

people and found my son a job. I was his job coach for the first 2 months and

occasionally check in on him and speak with his boss.

I hope the following is helpful to you.

I spoke with our Vet, and he said this class is not really for vet techs, but it

is an on line certificate class and will help get a job working as a kennel

helper at a vets office - The cost is about $105

Merryfield Kennels has a dog grooming program and a dog bather program - they

are at 5040 NE 12 Ave., Ft. Lauderdale

You would have to contact them to determine if the would allow your child into

the program and if they would require you or an aide to attend with your son -

Nova Southeastern has a program in Marine Biology for - non-degree seeking

students - you can contact the following to find out if your son would be

eligible and what allowances/accommodations would be made - imcs@...

Atlantic Votech in Pompano, Sheridan Votech in Hollywood and McFatter Tech in

Davie have Computer graphics and culinary arts

Classess. (Atlantic Votech has a High school program for students 18 to 22

also.)

If you go to http://www.browardeducator.com

you can click on the vocational schools link to learn more. My son took some of

the graphic arts certificate programs and a computer repair certificate program

at both McFatter and Atlantic.

Sheridan votech has some on-line programs - I believe a lady named Tobias

is in charge of the on-line programs, and she may be able to advise if they are

suitable for your son. The # is . They will be able to advise you

as to what accomodations are available also. The Technical schools -require a

placement test. It is not extremely difficult.

Regards,

Glenda
