Guest guest
Hey gang! Ok I'm really really tired I worked midnight shift last night and then had this appointment for Bree today so I might get things mixed up! They called and we got in earlier this morning than the original 11am because someone canceled. So she tells me all of our rights, etc and I have to sign for them to do the testing. This was ONLY speech/language evaluation thru the county school district for E.I pre-school (she is just 3). While I was signing this paper and she was going thru it Bree and is (my almost 2yro) were playing and such, Bree was talking a little and did say some sentences that were 4-6 words in length so the lady was like 'well I think I'll just do speech because her language sounds fine' and she was pretty much saying that she wouldn't qualify for services because we have to find 2 educational disabilities. Her PT for toe walking doesn't count because it's not educational. And she was saying that all the kids in the program are very much worse than Bree appeared to be just playing there with her sister, etc. So in the testing they ended up doing both speech and language, she did spit out a whole 7 word sentence! She said her language skills are good, and she didn't say anything about speech, I basically had to ask if I will get a report in the mail, etc. She said that they will call before they mail it and it has to be all typed up, etc. So I don't know any specifics on speech. Basically I'm getting AGAIN that because she's hearing in that speech banana up and down zigzagging between 20 and 40db she doesn't need anything. I DON " T CARE ABOUT NOW but what about that magical " 3rd grade " that I keep reading about where the majority of these kids are discovered with mild HL!!!! I got this same stuff from the old ENT, some from the audiologist although they really didn't tell me much of anything other than I had to go to an ENT as the next step. I just don't get it, granted I'm running on NO sleep since I got up at 6:30 yesterday morning but I'm about ready to cry (not to mention other marital issues going on). Issue one is her audiogram says she is hearing UNDER normal hearing that's in a sound booth so what is she out in the real world?!? And second her tympanograms 8 weeks apart were both flat something can't be right there! Thanks for listening (reading) any suggestions are definitely welcome. I just don't think I can afford to send her to preK this fall with the way things are regarding the house and marriage. -Robin Memphis (sucks) mommy to Constance 6, Breanna 3, is (almost 2) Robin, I know it's too late for you to read this before going to the meeting, but I just had to respond... Yes, it does matter. Ian's hearing loss was a cookie bite pretty much halfway through the banana when it was correctly diagnosed. It DID have an effect on his education and language acquisition ... in short it does matter and needs to be taken seriously. So, stand your ground and take it seriously. Is she missing the same amount as a " really deaf " kid? No, but why does she have to be " more deaf " for people to take it seriously? She has a need which requires attention and support. That is enough! I went through this with Ian (15 and 35 db loss) and it is so-o-o-o-o-o frustrating. Let us know how it goes and I'm sure we'll have suggestions and we'll definitely have plenty of empathy. Best -- Jill
