Guest guest
Emma, I went off the pill and didn't have improvement but other do, from what I've heard. I hate hormonal birth control, wish I had never bought into it! I think it's interesting that doctors say things like, " Estrace will just irritate you more " . How would they know? You haven't tried it yet! Estrace has helped many of us! If it irritates, usuallly getting it compounded in a more neutral base fixes that. Guest guest
You didn't say why you are stopping the pill but I presume you have your reasons. Ortho Tricyclen contains estradiol and estrace contains estradiol so I am wondering about the value of stopping one and starting the other. Whether or not I took estradiol had no effect on my vulvodynia but I did not have yeast. Guest guest
Ora, the bc pills do indeed have 'estradiol' in them...but the kind in the pill contains ethinyl (or synthetic, not natural to the body) and Estrace contains bio-identical estradiol (which the body recognizes as 'normal'). So, there truly can be a big difference. The synthetic hormones in the pill can 'block' hormone receptors (estrogen and testosterone) whereas bio-identical hormones fit like a key in a lock! Coming off the pill for some women with vulvar pain 'can' make a difference if they do indeed have 'skin' issues. As well as using bio-identical hormones to feed those deprived Estrogen receptors....Hugs, Chelletaurusrc@... wrote: You didn't say why you are stopping the pill but I presume you have yourreasons. Melinda, I remind the docs that the medical community says there is no cure for vulvar pain or IC...I turn their own words back on them when wanting to try something new, and so far they allow me to try what I ask for. I look at it this way....how can they not allow us to try something that "might" work, and we won't know until we try! I automatically think to myself that when a doc turns down a med, they simply are uneducated about it, and try to blow it off! That's why it's so good to arm yourself with info before going for an appt. and laying research on their desk and saying, "here read this".... I do it! When you put a fight (politely but with confidence) they usually won't turn you down! They want to get patients like that out the door asap! >>>>>>>Estrace has helped many of us! If it irritates, usually getting it compounded in a more neutral base fixes that. Very good point! Most of the time, it's not the Estrogen that is causing the irritation, but the inert ingredients! I've not had any problems with using Estrace, though. Hugs, Chelle
Guest guest
I certainly agree with you there but estrace alone is not used for birth control, although it might help with her problem. Guest guest
I recently got off birth control pill about 2 weeks ago and I am hoping it will get my hormones in control. I believe that VVS has something to do with our hormones being imbalanced, along with other things. Guest guest
Kaiser did a study (maybe it's on www.pubmed.com?) that showed a correlation between pill use and vulvar pain. While some docs will tell you that once it happens the damage is done, I don't believe that is always the case as the body has a way of healing and re-generating. I think going off the pill is a very wise choice for any of us that are having vulvar problems if at all possible. I will never take the pill again. I disagree about estrace, though. It is supposed to be very helpful. Sometimes the base can be irritating so it's important to have it compounded in a non-irritating base. Often estrace causes some itching at the beginning, but some doctors say that is because your tissue is healing. Have you also looked into physical therapy? If you think 'hormones' play a role in your vulvar pain, it's worth it to go off the pill and 'see' if you do any better. Guest guest
Where is this kaiser study? It's been referenced here before, and I've searched long and hard for something in pubmed linking vulvar pain and bc, but have found nothing that comes out and says it. Thanks michelle about the estrogen receptor article. shannon Kaiser did a study (maybe it's on www.pubmed.com? ) that showed a correlation between pill use and vulvar pain.
