Re: Hysterectomy anyone?

Chelle,

I had a vaginal hysterectomy ten or fifteen years ago

(can't even remember). I was prolapsed and got tired

of my uterus poking out of you know where and the

accompanying crowding, etc. I never did a better

thing in my life. I also had the ovaries removed

because I figured that they were going to be worn out

pretty soon anyway and I didn't want them there to

cause trouble or potentially cause any more excuse to

have to have more and better tests, etc. (I wanted

fewer reasons to go to the doc). The surgery was

nothing. It isn't scary at all.

I don't think most docs recommend hysterectomy so I

would take him at his word.

I didn't affect my life in any way except to make it

better and easier and healthier.

Good luck with your decisions.

Arline

Chelle, First of all - can you get a second opinion? That might make you calmer and more focused.I have my parts, but my sister (endometriosis) lost her "stuff" - to that disease .By the time she had the hys, (age 37) she only had uterus and left - they had already had to take both ovaries. She had almost no sex life before the surgery because of pain and pressure. After the surgery, on hormone replacement - she had a much improved sex life. She does have some minor bowel problems - but this is due in part to the endo (at time of first ovary removal) had grown on ovary and wrapped itself into the wall of the bowel. That removal (about 10 years before hyst.) was a difficult one and she does have some discomfort still.Otherwise, she certainly appears to be fine. She did not, though, have the prolapse- so its not comparing apples to apples. The endo though had really gotten a grip

on her bladder, bowels and female organs, so her pre op pain was really bad. Post op, she is much better off and she takes bio identicals to maintain sexual stability.DustyChelle wrote: I'm just now posting about this because I'm scared...I went Friday to my ob/gyn and his recommendation for me at this point is a hysterectomy. My uterus is prolapsed. I realize that hysterectomy doesn't have to be the first line of action for prolapse, and for me it's not. I've avoided this surgery for many years already! I had suspension surgery on my uterus 9 yrs. ago for severe retroversion. I had my second child 4 yrs ago and the ligaments are stretched out and allowed my uterus to drop. I'm scared. I would like to

hear from those of you that have had a hysterectomy. I also have IC, as well as v.pain, so it's important for me to know what kind of effects it might have on my bladder. Hopefully good, because right now, my uterus is sitting on top of my bladder. It's also causing bowels symptoms too, as well as pain with sitting. Oh, and I also have a fibroid...going for another ultrasound soon to see if it's grown anymore. I just don't think I have any other options right now... I'm not going to have my ovaries removed and I'm already on an Estrogen patch, so that is a plus. Please keep in mind that this is a hard decision...and I really don't want any scary stories... Questions: 1). Did it change your sex life? 2). Any bladder or bowel problems? 3). Vaginal infections? More, less, no change? Thanks, Chelle

Thanks so much, Arline....I appreciate you responding. I've heard so many 'bad' stories over the years that it's nice when I hear the good ones (more please)! My uterus isn't at the worst stage of prolapse right now...but I know that is where it's headed. Sorry for being nosey here...but I mean, hey, we're always talking about our vulva's *grin* so how did it affect your sex life? That is one of my biggest concerns. After all these years of pain...the last two years I've been doing really well sexually speaking...some have told me they were fine and it didn't affect their sex life at all...with others...they make statements like, it ruined mine...*yikes*...anyway, thanks and if you think of anything....please let me know... sincerely, ~Chelle BABB wrote: Chelle,I had a vaginal hysterectomy ten or fifteen years ago(can't even remember). Dusty, I could get a second opinion, but honestly, I don't think it would change anything. In my heart, I really know their is no other option...I just don't want to do it, though, I've had several surgeries over the years...and well, I hate surgery. I too know the pain from Endometriosis, developed it at 16. But after the birth of my second son, no more Endo pain. I knew then 'something' was up with my hormones...I would have never dreamed that I would sit here today with an Estrogen patch. Estrogen (in my mind) for years was my enemy...little did I know back then that while Estrogen feeds Endo...it is so good for the uro/gyn tissues. I was willing to risk re-stimulating the Endo in order to help my IC bladder and the v.pain. I'm going an Endocrinologist on the 27th...so hopefully I'll get down to the bottom of the hormone madness! My biggest scare right now

is that the surgery will interfere with my sex life in a bad way. It's only been two years now that I've really been enjoying "pain free" sex (most of the time). I want so badly to believe that this surgery will only help and not harm me... Thanks for your response... ~Chelle

Chelle,

My mom had a hsterectomy in her early 40's. She developed an infection during surgery when she had an IUD removed and her tubes done. The infection spread all over the pelvic area and on the bowels. She ended up in a life threatening situation from it and an emergency hysterectomy. They took everything but the cervix. She says she wishes they had taken it also.

She has had no problems with it. She was on hormones for a while, but is not on them now. She has no bladder or infection problems. She does have bowel blockage problems but that was caused from the infection that caused the need for the hysterectomy. The infection caused scar adhesions on her bowels where it had spread in the pelvic area. They literally had to scrape the infection off her insides. It wass a 9 hr surgery so you know it was bad. But as far as from the hysterectomy itself, she hasn't had any bowel problems. She hasn't seemed to have any problem with her sex life either...lol.

My stepmother also had one about 6 years ago and as far as I know, she hasn't had a problem with it.

Mom would like to see me get one as I've had issues with vulva cancer and ovaries. Plus ovarian cancer runs in our family. She says she doesn't think I'd miss it and that it would eleviate some of the medical problems and worries. She's glad that she has had hers removed. Says she doesn't miss it at all. So you know if she's pushing for me to talk to my dr about it, she's not having problems with it.

I know it's a hard choice to make. GL with it.

Yes, surgery is scary stuff. As I said in earlier post, my sister is better off now with her sex life and pain levels and others are writing similar responses. Is the prolapse whats been causing your lack of a period?DustyChelle wrote: Dusty, I could get a second opinion, but honestly, I don't think it would change anything. The hysterectomy made my sex life better because I had

been unable to take hormones as they wouldn't just

give me estrogen alone but since I had a uterus, they

would only give me combined estgrogen and

progesterone. The progesterone always made me really

sick.

After the hysterectomy I could take estrogen (bio

identical) and that improved my sex life a lot since I

don't think I had much estrogen before that as my

ovaries were pretty atrophied. It isn't just the

testosterone that makes one have libido but the

estrogen, too.

I wonder why they think it ruined their sex lives? Did

they not go on estrogen?
