Lowering the Incidence of Autism

Hi Everyone,

It has been a while since we have sent out a newsletter and we have a few exciting things to report.

Last month, I had my first scientific article published in Austism Science Digest, entitled "From Preconception to Infancy: Environmental and Nutritional Strategies for Lowering the Risk of Autism". The full article can be viewed here.

Last week, Van Ness of CBS10 in Tampa ran a story on the article. It can be viewed here.

In addition, I will be giving a lecture on this topic at the next Lori and Alec TIKVAH TALK meeting hosted by Tampa Jewish Family Services. I will discuss the strategies that has led to healthy developmental outcomes for children born into our practice in the last decade. This presentation will be held on Tuesday, May 22, from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Tampa Jewish Community Center located at 13009 Community Campus Drive, Tampa, FL 33625.

Please R.S.V.P. with name and phone number to Lydia at lydiaa@.... This meeting is open to the community.

Medical Center of Trinity to Host Monthly Support Group for Family Members/Friends Impacted by AutismMedical Center of Trinity will have the pleasure of hosting a new community support group for parents, family members, and friends impacted by autism and related neurological disorders such as, Sensory Integration, Tourette's, Aspergers, ADHD, etc. Relatives and family members of all these neurological disorders likely struggle with very similar issues on a daily basis and seek out the same treatments. In this way those who are impacted can benefit from group meetings.

The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 9 at 7 pm at the new Medical Center of Trinity, 9330 State Road 54, Trinity, Florida 34655. The meeting will be held in Conference Room C in the main building off the lobby. The first meeting will be a meet and greet with basic information. The group will continue to meet at Medical Center of Trinity on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 pm. Jonica Chittum, mother of an 8-year old with Autism, saw the need in the community and made the decision to spear-head this new support group. She will coordinate speakers and resource fairs on a regular basis based on the needs of the group at the time. For more information email jonica.chittum@... or call .

Vitamin D-Autism Prevention Study

Wholistic Pediatrics continues to participate as a recruitment and participation site for a new study that is investigating a potential role of Vitamin D deficiency in the development of Autism. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with many chronic conditions including weakened immunity, autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, and declining cognitive function and memory. It has been theorized that vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy and early childhood may contribute to children developing autism. The goal of this study is to see if vitamin D supplementation can prevent the recurrence of Autism in siblings of families with at least one child with Autism, by recruiting mothers of children with Autism who then become pregnant. Vitamin D levels of the mother are collected during the pregnancy, the mother will then be started on vitamin D3, and then the baby will be assessed for Autism at 18-24 months of age. Please click here for more information about the treatment protocol and recruitment criteria. Please contact our office at or info@... if interested in participating in the study. I recently completed an informal study of 75 patients, and found that only 3 out of the 75 children and pregnant women had 25 hydroxy-vitamin D levels in the optimal range. We are recommending that all people have their blood levels checked, with a desired goal of 70-80ng/ml. Full information about vitamin D deficiency and treatment can be found at www.vitamindcouncil.com.
