The Hillsborough County School District needs a lesson in the law. This is 2012, not 1966. The law states that school districts should educate children in their home school with the appropriate supports and they must not discriminate due to their disability. Hillsborough County obviously doesn't know the law, nor does it appear that they care they are violating this child's right to a free and appropriate education. The State of Florida should not tolerate this type of discrimination and should get involved in training the staff in Hillsborough County about civil rights and IDEA requirements. Here is an excerpt from the petition:I am a 13 year old Autistic self-advocate who communicates using augmented and alternative communication. I am strong and resilient; I have had over 20 surgeries. So why should one of the biggest challenges I face come from the very people that should be here to educate me? I want an education from his neighborhood school, but the Hillsborough County School District (HCSD), which is the 8th largest school district in the nation, refuses to let me attend the school only 200 yards away from his home. http://www.change.org/henry Regards,Ven Sequenzia, Jr. PresidentAutism Society of AmericaState of Florida Chapter
