Guest guest
The Anti-Caking agent can't really be avoided because it's used in nearly everything. I believe it says that in BTVC, or else I saw that on a website where the same question was asked and that was Elaine's response. That you can't really avoid it. If I can find the post i'll forward it to you. You can slo buy Parm cheese in a wedge and then grate it yourself. It's alot stronger in flavor, but I used up the stuff in the plastic jar before I did this even though it had cellulose in it as an anti-caking agent. Some spices mixes were okay except for containing soybean oil. I tossed them... they're part of his steak marinade. Augh~ I've been able to point to the illegal list, show him that soybean oil is not ok and managed to get the item in the "out" basket. I'm having trouble with the "ny's Garlic Spread Seasoning." It has:Granulated Garlic - ok, right?Parmesan Cheese (Part skim milk, salt, cheese culture, enzymes, micro crystalline cellulose used for anti-caking) - Bad because of the anti-caking agent?Salt - OkayL-Glutamic Acid - Bad because I don't know what this is and don't see it on the list! It has Glu in the name.. making a nooblet like me nervous.Spices - Good/bad? I don't know. I decided that 2 maybe no's plus an "I don't know" equaled an absolutely not.Parsley - GoodSilicon Dioxide (anti-caking agent) - Bad because it's an anti-caking agent and those scare me. As you can see, I don't have any concrete, rational, point-to-it proof that I can throw this in the "out" basket. Just a ton of warning flags that went off in my brain. Besides the fact that I can combine my own parsley and parmesan and KNOW it's ok. Can someone walk me through how to search this out better? I can win this wrestling match if I have better moves!OT, my range decided to die on me so my diet may start a few days later than this weekend depending on how long a new range (that I get to pick out tomorrow) takes to arrive. Carol True! I'm pretty excited about it! I'm looking at convection ovens.. but I'll have to adjust cooking temps on all the recipes. Does anyone use a convection oven now that can give me some guidelines? *** Marilyn wrote: Does this sound like your husband and his ny's mix? Hubby's mix is more like your Dale's... sounds like I need to make that for him! Generic " spices " is bad, because you have no idea what's in those spices. Sometimes, SUGAR or STARCH is considered a " spice " in a mixture. In my opinion, it isn't a " spice, " but then, I'm just a person with IBS, not someone trying to maximize my profits. Hubby () thought that spices could never mean sugar. I smiled, nodded and will never buy anything that says " spices " in the ingredient list. I do the shopping. Problem solved. *grin* BTW, as a starter for making your own mix of this, I would probably start with about 3 tablespoons of freshly grated Parmesan (use a microplane grater to get the finest shreds), 2 tablespoons of fresh, pressed garlic, and 1 tablespoon of dried or 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely shredded. Then add more or less of the items, per your taste buds... and add other spices as seem indicated to you. Oh, good idea. That sounds yummy! *** OT, I've been wanting to purchase a food dehydrator as well as the other cooking supplies I've been buying, but I'd already reached the end of my monthly " slush " fund and then the range died, so there goes the emergency funds. I decided to reach out to my Freecycle group. Someone had a dehydrator that had been sitting on the back porch gathering dust. I've got some cleaning to do, but I've also got a good starter dehydrator until I can afford something nicer. (When I can, I'll Freecycle this one again.) This is how they describe themselves on Freecycle.org. " The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,769 groups with 6,921,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving ( & getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free. " It's a good way to get rid of all that stuff cluttering our lives that we can't throw out because it still has life left in it, we're just not using it. We have " Wanted Wednesdays " here when we can ask for things.. Tah Dah! I have a dehydrator. Hitting the farmer's market on Saturday! Just a thought for any of you that may be into it.
