Guest guest
Donna - I'm Marsha - and I spoke of throat spasms. This was in the context of having panic/anxiety disorder - diagnosed 2 years before I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I've always thought that the panic/anxiety disorder and then being diagnosed with Fibro was a " closely related " happening. Symptoms of both swayed back and forth - and sometimes they still do. Many symptoms of Fibro are identicle to symptoms of panic/anxiety disorder. I noted that many " in here " have panic attacks - so I think a conclusion that's reasonable is: they are closely related and sometimes " interchangable. " What do you think? Someone mentioned throat spasms, which I have never heard of anyone else having before, much less having it be associated with FM or CFS. Could we spark some discussion about this symptom? Are the throat spasms like your gag reflex working overtime? I've had this problem for a few years and never thought to mention it to a doc-just thought I had a really sensitive gag reflex for some reason. Actually I don't know if you call what I have throat spasms or not. It is all part of an anxiety attack. I feel like I can't swallow. I have an awful time swelling something. Take care, Irene Books may well be the only true magic Alice Hoffman.

Guest guest
Dear Marsha: My name is Dee and I have something in my throat also. It almost feels like heart palpations and it comes on when I am stressed out or extremely tired. I have fibro and panic and anxiety attacks, so I think all of this does go together. I lost my grandfather last Friday and my uncle lost his mother-n-law and also his father, my grandfather so the stress of all of this brought on the throat spasms again. Sometimes I have trouble swallowing. I am feeling better today as my life seems to be calming down again. I just wanted to share because I can relate to throat spasms or palpations or whatever they are. God Bless Dee

Guest guest
Dee... Hi! I'm glad you wrote to me! I remember feeling SO ALONE when I got panic disorder. It was in 1984 - (altho' I could see I'd been 'panicking' since childhood - just no huge manifestation of it until 1984). I had NO ONE to talk to about it. Because if anyone had it - they were ashamed of it and didn't want anyone to know? Of course, there's NEVER a support group because those w/panic attacks many times are agorophobics and can't leave the house. It was a lonely road. And I bet yours has been too! I lost a husband over it -- but the GOOD NEWS is that he was an a__hole - and I remarried the finest man. Unfortunately, he got cancer and passed away. But he made up for all the pain of the previous lost marriage. So now that I know YOU go thru' this? I can share with you about it - and I hope you share with me about it. And when we're having a hard time, at least we KNOW how the other one feels and can encourage, listen and understand. I don't feel ALONE any more. Thank God, there's now a lot of information about this stuff and it's NOT a place of shame. It's a place of working out our emotional and mental health to overcome the stuff that comes at us. > My name is Dee and I have something in my throat also. And Dee - I give you my sincere condolences for your losses and ALSO because of what I know it puts you through! You can talk to me anytime you want to. I hope you have medication that addresses this (xanax?) -- sometimes just telling someone that you're having a hard time lessens the strength of the attack. If you can -- I recommend getting alone one time soon and really letting your tears out - cry and keep on crying even tho' we HATE to cry - at least I do. My nose gets stuffy, I get a headache and I used to avoid it. But now I understand that if I get the " crying out " - my throat gets better. I wish I could " hand you kleenexes " and encourage you to just keep on crying until you get that emotion out of you. And if you can get to doing this? Remember - I'm " handing you the kleenexes " from here and urging you to get this grief OUT of you. I'll cheerlead you and help you any way I can. My home email is: ivory@... I welcome anyone's emails that want to share with me - and I'll do my best to encourage you. And I'm not ALONE in this any more. Oh, I'm glad you said this, I finally understood what you guys were talking about. I can get like this if I'm really upset and crying over things, other than that I don't get it. I do actually have problems swallowing stuff on occasion. I can feel it stuck in my throat and I start to get the gag reflex, so I quickly drink more water. Sometimes it takes several gulps to get it to wash down. Doesn't happen all of the time though. It may be related to fibro since Dr. " less than wonderful " asked me if I had problems swallowing. I think that in a way - our " throat " is closing because we might be holding emotions in that NEED TO COME OUT - but that's a simplistic way of looking at throat spasms - there's probably many more reasons this happens..I choke on food more often - once doing a gig, I took a slug of rootbeer and part of it CAME OUT MY NOSE because my throat constricted and didn't take " the whole swallow! " Yea, it was FUNNY to my audience!! But funnier to me--afterwards!! :-) When I start to " choke " a lot - I do ask myself, " So, Marsha - are you tamping down some pain that needs to come out? " Sometimes the answer is yes. And sometimes, no? Go figure! I know it's NO FUN! That's what I know! And NOW - I know I'm not alone in having this symptom. Thank you, Darcy. Guest guest
Dear Marsha, Thank you for the Kleenex box. Yes, I need to cry as I have not let myself stop and do this. I do take buspar for anxiety, but I don't take it everyday like I should. I am trying to wean myself off of all medicines. I also take tambarcor ( spelling?) for heart palpations. The heart medicine normally keeps things in check unless things are highly stressful and then it doesn't. I do take my heart medicine like I should and that is the only medicine that I regularly take. I tried Xanax but I could not tolerate the side effects. I wanted to sleep all the time. Finding this support group was great for me as I found that I was not alone. Thank you also for the condolences. My grandfather was 80 and lived a great life right up to the end. I spent New Year's Eve with him and my family, playing cards, and eating snacks and those memories and more will always be with me. God Bless You! Guest guest
Dear Marsha, You maybe on to something about your concept of having emotions built up in a person and having our throat restrict so that things don't go down right. I sometimes have to take shots in my neck because of tightness and the doctor said it was from holding stress in my neck and shoulders. If it is in my neck, it is probably in my throat. Good thought! Finding this support group was great for me as I found that I was not alone. Buspar is a much safer drug! However - It didn't help me - made me anxious, of all things. I got off xanax in 1996 - and got down to a small amt. of valium (diazapam) to control throat spasms. I feel I have a pretty good " lid " on the panic disorder. And taking the least amt. of medicine is also a good idea. It's hard for our bodies to assimilate a LOT of medicine. > > Thank you also for the condolences. My grandfather was 80 and lived a great life right up to the end. I spent New Year's Eve with him and my family, playing cards, and eating snacks and those memories and more will always be with me. We're lucky when we get to spend time w/loved ones before they leave us. It's kind of a " closure " for them and us? Altho' that term " closure " gets way over-used, I think. I miss my grandfather every day of my life as he was my HERO. And the man who made me feel " safe " and also accepted totally for who I was. I'm so glad I had him - because my Dad (his only son) was NOT a father or a nurturer in any sense of the word. So I have an idea about your loss.... Guest guest
Dee.... There's a therapy some counselors use called EMDR. If you want to know about it - you can use a seach engine/browser and type in EMDR - and you'll get pros and cons about this method. The idea of it - is that " professionals " feel we began feeling anxiety and stress IN THE WOMB - and so this therapy focuses on our physical reactions to stress and pain from our earliest years. As I've gone along - going " back and feeling emotions " and then seeing the " way " I could have been protected or just acknowledged my pain and fear of " that time " seems to relax the body and take the power out of the memory - it's used a lot in POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER - and the truth is - many of us suffer this from bizarre childhoods and our bodies felt this stress and pain for many years BEFORE it manifested in panic attacks; fibro; etc... It works for me - it doesn't work for many others...as is usually the case! But I've sure learned to vent emotion - to give my body a chance to experience how " it " feels and then calm down..... Hugs...Marsha > You maybe on to something about your concept of having emotions built up in a person and having our throat restrict so that things don't go down right. > > I sometimes have to take shots in my neck because of tightness and the doctor said it was from holding stress in my neck and shoulders. Guess this is why I shouldn't write messages when I'm tired. I obviously didn't clearly say what I meant. I meant that I suffer from my throat closing upset which has nothing to do with the fibro. I've always done that if I'm upset enough. I thought maybe the actual problems with swallowing where a pill or cake or whatever, actually feels like it's stuck in my throat and I have wash it down with water before I start gagging, might come from fibro since the rheumy who specializes in fibro asked me if I had problems swallowing.
