It seems unlikely that such a small liver could help that much. The points athan makes do bring that theory into question. Where would the bile go after going though the baby's liver, and a lot of babies are jaundice at or shortly after birth (I thought that was because of an under developed Liver).

Barb,Have you found any actual research on this issue? I ask because I've heard both theories (that the babies liver is helping, and that the mothers immune system is altered by pregnancy) but never heard any

actual evidence to back up either one.The " babies liver helping " theory sounds simpler to me, but leaves me with a couple questions. For instance, the main problem in PSC is getting the bile out, and that's usually done via the bile ducts into

the intestine and thence out of the body. Since the baby doesn't actually have anywhere to send the bile it can't really help with removing it that much. After all many newborns are jaundiced just from

trying to process their own bilirubin!Of course I may be wrong about that, but I wonder if anyone's looked into it deep enough to give a definitive answer.athan Messages in this topic (5) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic

I couldn't find anything specifically about PSC, but I found this about AIH:

" We speculate that the immunosuppressive effect of pregnancy induced

remission of the autoimmune hepatitis in our patients "

Here:

http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1478-3231.1999.tb00010.x

So the " immune system modulation " theory is at least out there for some

similar diseases.
