Guest guest
Hi , My husband had high iron levels in the tests done a few months ago and they suspected hemachromatosis but the tests came back negative. That was before he was diagnosed with PSC and you have just reminded me that they didn't give us a reason for the high iron levels. Tomorrow, we are having the first appointment with my husband's long-term gastroenterologist since the PSC diagnosis and I have loads of questions to ask - I will ask about the iron and let you know what we find out. Good luck with your investigations Cheers, Kate > > Hi All, Has anyone had a problem with high iron levels in blood work? > Hemachromatosis has basically been ruled out but we still don't have an > explaination for the really high iron levels. Guest guest
Hi ; The most common cause of hereditary hemochromatosis is a mutation in the HFE gene, but other mechanisms could be at play in causing excessive iron accumulation in other liver diseases. One mechanism might be a dysregulation of the expression of the protein hepcidin, which seems to play a key role in regulating iron absorption. Decreased expression of hepcidin in the liver can cause iron overload, while increased expression of hepcidin can cause iron deficiency (anemia). Some articles on hepcidin are listed here: http://www.psc-literature.org/hepcidin.htm I've been interested in this topic because when our son was first diagnosed he was found to have elevated serum iron, and they initially thought he might have hemochromatosis. He was found to have PSC, not hemochromatosis. But we never did get a good explanation for his elevated serum iron at diagnosis from his doctors. Best regards, Dave (father of (23); PSC 07/03; UC 08/03) > Hi All, Has anyone had a problem with high iron levels in blood work? Guest guest
Dave, Thank you for the information. My husband, Rick, has had some interesting bloodwork lately so I am really trying to get some answers. His red blood cells, white blood cells, and Segs are really low. His doctor wants it checked again this week and if it isn't better he needs to see a hematologist. They wouldn't give me an idea of what they think it might be. And then with the high iron levels it makes me even more concerned. And on top of that we still don't know about the Disease urine copper test yet. The only thing we do know is that the PSC is causing lots of strictures and dilation in the intrahepatic second and third branches, but I don't really know what that means in terms of what stage that is considered. I am really just trying to get a clear explaination of where everything stands. I am sure that I am thinking into things too much but for my own sanity I need to know. I am going to call Mayo monday to find out if there is any info on the urine test because I can't wait any more. Thanks for responding and I am so glad that there are people that I can ask about all of this stuff. wife to Rick-crohn's, psc, spondyloarthropathy, gilber's, ?? www.jaimeandrick.blogspot.com > > > Hi All, Has anyone had a problem with high iron levels in blood > work?
