Guest guest
I think that for some people, this is true, and it is in my case also. The difference is that my hair is silky and shiny now, but there's not as much of it, and it has no body, yet it is still a normal amt. See, I had hair like a Tahitian's when I was very very hypo, even though it was dry, or maybe I should say that it started being very very thick and healthy while I was healthy, then continued on through hypo, until I began to get very sick. I would trade this wispy fine lifeless hair for that thick dry hair any day, but I think that testosterone or estrogen or the other imbalances related to thyroid and adrenals have more to do with this than anything. Guest guest
My hair does that too...but I relate it to thyroid disease. Mimi Isabel Silveira wrote: Hello, I have a friend who was diagnosed with celiac disease at the end of last year. It seems to me that once off of gluten, if her hair situation improved, then there should be no reason that it would worsen again with no gluten in her diet. Has anyone experienced a similar situation? Thanks, Isabel in CA

Guest guest
Isabel, I can always tell my thyroid is low when my hair starts falling out again. (Usually this is most noticed when shampooing as it gets all caught up in my fingers; I have long hair.) My 'test' is the amount of hair I see on the shower wall when I am done showering. I also notice that it falls out easily when I am watching TV and just combing my hair with my fingers...and end up having to get up to throw it away. At times, I am SHOCKED when I vacuum and come across a huge 'pile' of it in one area (it gets caught on the brush, I have hardwood floors.) Put it this way: My hairdresser of about 9 years says I have about 1/3 of the hair I had 5-6 years ago. It used to take her 3 perm kits to do my head. She said now, if I were to perm, it would take one. UGH! I have not noticed this to be a celiac issue. However, since both thyroid disease and celiac disease are auto immune disorders, it makes sense that your friend could be having an under active thyroid (although, I have had hair loss when I has hypERthyroid too.) Dry skin and sleep issues are other big signals of thyroid upset. I would tell your friend to look into the thyroid issue. And like celiac, the doctors don't usually know a ton about it...they order just the TSH test and that is NOT enough! They should also order a Free T4 and a Free T3 (this is a tough one to get ordered!) and a TPO (there are a couple antibodies tests that would suffice.) Antibodies would be indicative of Hashimoto's (AI hypOthyroidism vs another cause.) Tell your friend to make sure she gets copies of her labs. So many times patients will be told they are 'fine' when actually, they ARE NOT! Just because one falls within the range, does not mean THEY are okay...their good spot may be lower or higher! I just had mine tested again, got results today. Am going to see doc tomorrow. He doesn't think I need to do anything different. Wrong! I need more replacement meds. I am sleeping too much. I feel better than I did, but my numbers were NOT okay! My FT4 was below range (you want to be in the top 1/2-1/3.) The same for the FT3. The TSH was about half way in the range (a bit higher than good for me.) I like to be near the bottom of the range, I feel best there. So....on goes the quest to find a nice balance with the ol' thyroid. HTH, in Maine Message 17 From: "Isabel Silveira" hmbsoccermom@... Guest guest
There are other autoimmune diseases that can cause thinning hair. she should have her tsh checked she may have a thyroid issue. That is usually easy to fix with a daily pill. Isabel Silveira wrote: Hello, I have a friend who was diagnosed with celiac disease at the end of last year. Guest guest
Dear Group, I noticed the subject of hair loss. I think this has come up before. Funny, but my son who has PSC sent me an email yesterday to research Rogaine for him! He's 25yrs.old and his hair is really thinning. It can't be hereditary because no males on either my side or my husband's side of the family are bald. Thinning hair seems so petty in light of all the serious issues currently happening in the group, but if anyone has any input into treatments I'd appreciate it. I just told him to talk to his doctor about it. Thanks for any input. Great news that Ken stood alone! ( 's mom )See what's free at AOL.com.
