Shaking and Dizziness

My husband, , was diagnosed with PSC in Jan 07. I've posted before so you may remember that he is in Stage IV Cirrhosis, chronic pancreatitis and has real problems with HE (hospitalized 6 times since 10/07) - however, his blood work is within or close to normal ranges. He is listed with a MELD of 8.

The last week or so his hands have been VERY shakey - most of the time. He has also been dizzy and yesterday he almost fell - it was very close. The dizziness has been the last few days.

He is scheduled for an MRCP and CT tomorrow but we won't be talking to the docs. Has anyone had these problems and what do you recommend we do? He is diabetic and has a difficult time controlling his blood sugars but he has checked them regularly and they are pretty much the same as always - not outrageously high or low.

We would appreciate your input.

Thanks,

Barbara (wife of , PSC 07, Chronic Pancreatitis, HE, Diabetes, Osteoporosis)

Barbara,

Hi! I'm sorry to hear your husband is suffering from shaking and dizziness. I

can't offer much help, but I did have the same thing happen to me a bit back.

It got to the point where I couldn't hold a glass or a fork I was shaking so

bad. I was also so dizzy and shaky that I used a wheelchair about 95% of the

time at that point. I mentioned it to my doctors. They weren't entirely

certain what was causing it, but attributed it to medication, exhaustion and low

blood pressure. They changed around some medications (namely Reglan) and it did

seem to help a bit. Unfortunately, I do still sometimes get shaking throughout

my hands (I have it today, actually), but it is better than it was. I just

thought I'd let you know my experiences so you/your husband didn't feel all

alone out there in this!

I hope you find some answers and that you're soon on your way to shake- and

dizzy-free days!

By the way, I almost always have a tingling feeling in my fingers. It's as

though my hands are on something that is vibrating or that stage right before

your hand really falls asleep. Does your husband have that as well?

Good luck!

Sandi in VA

I get ver similar symptoms sometimes and they have determined that at

times I become severly hypoglycenic. Don't know if that's what's

happening but I thought I would through it out there

This used to happen to me before my transplant too. I'd get very shaky

and dizzy, but it would go away when I ate something.

We've checked his blood sugars when this happens and they are pretty consistent. High, but not unusual for him. There have been times when his blood sugars are low when he was shaking and we knew what was going on then (hypoglycemic) but that is not what this is.

ALSO, he asked me to see if anyone has alot of joint pain. I'm assuming that has to do with his Osteoporosis. Does anyone have any other thoughts on any of this?

Joint pain is one of the classic extraintestinal symptoms of ulcerative colitis,

but I don't believe you've ever said has it. Has he had a colonoscopy to

confirm/deny?

" He has had a colonoscopy and luckily he does NOT have UC or Chrones. However, he does have IBD. "

IBD is a family of bowel diseases which include UC and Crohn's

Inflammatory bowel disease

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The main forms of IBD are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC).

Accounting for far fewer cases are other forms of IBD:

Collagenous colitis Lymphocytic colitis Ischaemic colitis Diversion colitis Behçet's syndrome Infective colitis Indeterminate colitis

The main difference between Crohn's disease and UC is the location and nature of the inflammatory changes. Crohn's can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from mouth to anus (skip lesions), although a majority of the cases start in the terminal ileum. Ulcerative colitis, in contrast, is restricted to the colon and the rectum.
