I am not sure if anyone has ever asked this. But I was diagnosed this

summer with PSC. And have always been a support of blood donation.

Now that I have been diagnosed does that disqualify me from donating

blood now??? I have had 2 cholangitis attacks so far but no other

issues yet.

I've been advised not to donate blood - not due to PSC but due to meds I take for UC. My hemoglobin count is low normal anyway, which would preclude me from donating. I haven't donated for about 20 years as a result.

Sadly, about 25 years ago (I'm 53 now), my specialist told me that Iwas destined to be the type of person who receives blood donations (due to medications and generally poor and/or complicated health issues), not the type who could donate the blood myself. And it proved right; I've had multiple transfusions in the last 15 years, all for low crit (anemia, not enough iron in my bloodstream). I was disappointed that I wasn't able to help others, but have signed paperwork to donate my body to PSC research. At least I may be able to help others in the best way possible. And even though I'm an avid political animal (walking precincts every weekend, phone banks on weeknights), the only bumper stickers on my car are dedicated to promote donor awareness.

Don't feel bad,,,,they would not let me donate blood simply because I was an RN working Labor and Delivery.

Debbie,

What did paperwork didn you sign to donate your body to PSC research? I would definitely be interested in doing that too, not that I'm planning on dying anytime soon.

Thanks,

Darcy

Beth,

I am also on blood thinners so I am no longer able to donate (with all the blood tests I've gone through I no longer fear needles). It may be still possible for you to donate. Check at your local blood clinic.

I have never been able to donate blood because I had hepatitis when I was a teenager. Turns out it was hepatitis A. I still can't donate blood, but now there are probably multiple reasons why I can't donate. However, I can be an organ donor (to anyone who has had Hep A), so I am that. I doubt anyone would want my liver, but as I was told, if someone is waiting for an organ, near death, has had Hep A, then one of my organs may be considered as it would be better than death. And I do have a Donate Life bumper sticker on my car. Interestingly, I had someone try to run me off the road not too long ago. I couldn't figure it out, but then I remembered the bumper sticker. Not sure why someone would want to run me off the road because of that, but there are some people opposed to organ donations.Marie
