Guest guest
Has anyone had pain after having varices banded? My husband, Jerry had five varices banded Thursday morning. He has been having substantial pain in his chest ever since. His pain is near his sternum in his chest. He has pain when he bends over, and when he when he swallows. (He says its like swallowing a ball of play-dough). The pain is enough that he is having trouble sleeping and I think he is even running a low grade fever. The dr. did not mention any type of post banding pain or give him any pain medication. Does anyone else have any experience with this, is this normal? Thank you, wife of Jerry PSC 01, UC 05, in process of transplant evaluation.

It varies a lot, from not much pain to a whole lot. I did ask for pain meds after one round of banding. I think the amount of pain ha a lot to do with how many varices are banded and exactly where they are. Sometimes they seem to cause more trouble when swallowing too. So to answer your question, it is normal, and it should go away, but if it's too bad, asking for pain meds might not be a bad idea. In the meantime, eat soft foods and have some water on hand to wash it down with... athan > My husband, Jerry had five varices banded Thursday morning.
