Guest guest
Argh! I've been having so much trouble with my knees lately that I can hardly stand it... and on top of everything, last night while I was trying to stand up, my knees refused and I fell and hurt myself even more... the muscle rubs just aren't working... vicodin works, but I hate to use such a strong painkiller very often... plus, it makes me sick... I have vioxx here, but that's never done anything for me... anyone have any suggestions of what I can do? I have to be out of the house today so I can't just use my heating pad... and yet somehow I have to walk today... *sigh* any suggestions appreciated... Guest guest
You say that the vicodin works - why are you against using it? It's really not THAT strong a painkiller compared to lots of others that are used, and if it helps you to function and lessens your pain, then I think you should just resign yourself to taking it on a regular basis if your doctor is willing to prescribe it that way. You're very lucky - pain medications don't work on everybody with FMS, so at least you have an option! If you're worried about the " addiction " problem, the way my doctors explain it to me is that if you're using the medication for legitimate pain treatment and if it improves your quality of life, then you're not addicted, any more than a diabetic is " addicted " to insulin! Your body becomes dependent on it for good health and quality of life, but you're not an " addict " in the usual sense of the word. You can't just stop taking it suddenly, any more than you could stop taking anti-depressants or lots of other meds without being weaned off of them, but as long as the medication works, why would you want to go off of it anyway? ;-) I'm on several medications for pain that I take every 8 hours, round the clock, and I assume that I'm going to have to take them on this schedule for the rest of my life (and I'm only 42), but it doesn't bother me that I have to take them or that my body is dependant on them in the least - it means the difference between my being in bed like a bump on a log 24 hrs; a day and being able to have a relatively normal life!! It just seemed like a question that only had one answer as far as I was concerned! Feel free to ask me further, or contact me offlist if you like also. Good luck to you!! - mailto:bluskies@... Guest guest
Thanks ... your words about addiction made quite a bit of sense... that is, indeed, what I'm worried about... and, well the vicodin doesn't take ALL of the pain away, but takes the edge off enough that I can actually walk... it wasn't prescribed for me for my chronic pain... it was prescribed for a sinus infection (believe it or not)... all docs that I have seen refuse to treat the worst of my pain, the muscle pain, etc. It's been very frustrating!! I don't have a diagnosis yet. I know about antidepressants as I am also bipolar... so I get the gist of what you mean about addiction, etc... thanks so much for your reply... just before I got it, I had broken down and taken a vicodin... *L* Someryn --- Outgoing mail is certified Vermin Free Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Hello Everyone I had both hips resurfaced in August 2003. On only about 3 occasions I have been woken in the night with extreme agony in my knees. This feels very much like the avascular necrosis pain I was experiencing before the operation. I have emailed my surgeon and am currently waiting to hear back from him. Has anyone else experienced pain like this 6 months following their operation? I have to admit I am a little worried because it does feel exactly like the pain I had before. Many thanks - I always read everyone's postings and hope you are all getting over your operations. Guest guest
Just a quick fingers-and-tose-check: Have you been unduly active beforehand? When I have knee pain it is up to this point always because my hips let me overdo it. Overdoing it, if you have incipient arthritis of the knees can include sitting for an extended period with them folded up under you. Another issue is how different your gait is pre/post-op. If you are walking a lot different then there could be quite a change in the stresses on the knees. These sorts of things are pretty insidious, since if you walked ginkgy for years what looks like nice normal relaxed walking can actually be taxing parts of you that are badly underused (e.g. your thigh muscles, which actually stabilize how your kneecap tracks, if these are weak, walking can give you nasty pains). As always ask the surgeon, but maybe keep this in mind for the next few days to see if this might apply. Cheers, Jeff >Hello Everyone > >I had both hips resurfaced in August 2003.
