Guest guest
I'm guessing the most likely cause, seeing as though you have PSC, wouls be the cholangitis having a bit of a play around inside you at the mo. There are other causes though - I've been jaundiced 3 times in the last couple of years; once through Haemolytic Anaemia; once through a gall stone blocking my bile duct thingies; and most recently a cholangitis attack.. which i'm still a wee bit yellow from (I've dubbed myself Banana Man for the time being!). Don't know how it works for you guys over the pond in the big old US, but over in little England, i went into A&E (ER?) every time. Get seen quicker, and none of the piddling about on the telephone trying to explain what shade of yellow you are. Get yaself seen by a doc, and get sorted out! I don't know about indication of progression, but it almost always means bile duct blockage. I've only experienced this twice 7 & 8 years ago (knock on wood) - both times were cholangitis. Guest guest
Well. I'm home and uncomfortable, but not terribly so. Not the most fun news we could have hoped for: I was restented in the same area where they removed a stent just 3 months ago, and the doc said the area was almost completely closed off. Both my hep and the endoscopist agree that I'll leave this stent in for 6 weeks, then have it exchanged for a new stent, have that one for 6 more weeks. And this might just go on and on; hep said we may be at a point where I just have to continually be restented. That doesn't sound like fun. 1 week of ERCP recovery with pain (based on my last stent insertion), 5 good weeks. 1 week recovery, 5 good weeks. I'll try to be Pollyanna about this: 5 good weeks is better than NO good weeks, right? Right. Let's hope for the 'light switch' feeling I had last time after my stent insertion where, within a week, I felt like a completely different person. Guest guest
Genevieve, May I ask why they plan to replace the stent every 6 weeks? Mine was replaced every 4 months. After a few replacements they decided to remove it and not put in a new one, and that is more than two years ago. I hope the same will eventually happen to you. Guest guest
Hi Chaim, My last stent in this same stricture was in for 8 weeks, and had slipped out and was just peeking into the small intestine when they went in for my stent removal. I'm not sure of this, but maybe they are thinking they'll get in there to replace it with a slightly larger stent before it slips again?? Interesting yours were in for 4 months... I was told at that first ERCP that stents can only stay in for 8 weeks. I wonder if different hospitals just do it differently, or if you had a different kind of stent? Guest guest
That is what Tylers doctor would tell him also . He always took his stents out after 4-6 weeks, he said they could cause an infection or slip. Sometimes he would put in another, sometimes he would just dialate the duct and that would take care of the problem for awhile. Guest guest
Genevieve, I have been continually restented since Oct 2006. My stent is changed every 3 months although one time I did go 4 months because I just didn't want to mess with it around the Holidays. I don't have much hope of going without the stent. I tried to convince the dr that I needed a trial time without the stent and he refused. He told me he wasn't stenting me because it was fun or he needed the practice but that it was necessary to maintain bile flow. I guess I have a dominant stricture that covers most of my duct and it starts to close again as soon as the stent is removed. I have gotten larger stents a few times. I definitely understand your frustration at being at the point where you have to be continually restented. I've tried to look at it like getting an oil change in my car. Every 3 months or 5,000 miles I need an oil change and a tune-up. Darcy hep said we may be at a point where I just have to continually be restented.
