Guest guest
Just thought I might mention that hepatology isn't a " true " specialty in the sense that doctors don't do residencies in the field. Most drs who call themselves Hepatologists are GIs that have spent extra time and resources studying the liver. The level of expertise a " hepatologist " has isn't standard. I would definitely ask my doctor how many other PSC patients, as well as other auto-immune related liver diseases, the doctor treats. You might find that a doctor has a certificate of training in hepatology, but that is not the same as other specialties. I think that there are enough over-lap problems w/ PSC that it would be good to know if your doctor treats PBC, or AIH, or auto-immune cholangitis. You might ask them if they attend liver conferences regularly also. Just thought I'm mention that. Guest guest
Cheryl This is a good point. If your hospital has a website, some of this info will be there. I saw my hep today and he mentioned that he was just back from 2 weeks on the road attending and speaking at conferences. It really does make a huge difference in even their general awareness of what is new in the field of hepatology and auto-immune disease.
