Dawn/Potassium Article & Selenium/Iodine Article-Somewhat Long

Dear Dawn, I apologize I didn't have this over the weekend. I hope, however, this helps. From what I can tell, the authors are on the up and up. Rector Page has her own website--apparently in the business of nutrition and supplements. She's listed in some website as Dr. Rector--she's a Phd, which makes her a doctor but not an MD. After reading and re-reading the articles, I think that there is a lot of substance here. What it tells me, though, is that good nutrition for thyroid patients is really critical--something I was never told when I was first diagnosed (over 12 years ago). What is also frustrating is that few doctors ever talk about nutrition in real specifics with patients. Whenever I've brought up certain questions, I eventually am told that they are sure and that I would have to consult a dietician, etc.

Still, I went to the USDA website to see what the real RDA guidelines are. They had really good graphs and read-outs on what is recommended for people in all age groups. I intend on taking this to my new doctor in the next few weeks to see if I can get more information on how to deal with iodine, potassium, selenium, etc. I have often thought that something "else" is wrong in association with my thyroid disease because I eat a completely vegan diet due to digestive problems, and I cannot lose weight. In other words, when you banish all the crappy food from diet and nothing gets better, then what is the deal with the thyroid, metabolism, nutrient and hormone conversion? I don't know if this helps or not, but I hope so. Best wishes, Carolyn
