Guest guest
Orlando Sentinel Worker arrested for abusing disabled man at Mount Dora treatment facility 04/21/2012 A worker at a Lake Jem treatment facility for people with mental and behavioral problems has been arrested after deputies believe he beat a disabled resident with a belt. Andre Mays, a 31-year-old Orlando man, was working at the Carlton Palms Educational Center when a witness told deputies that he could hear Mays beating the 29-year-old resident with a belt and calling him stupid. Deputies investigated the Wednesday incident along with the state Department of Children and Families after hearing of the abuse through a hotline. The resident's parent's were concerned because their son had scratches and bruises all over his face, according to the arrest affidavit, but told deputies their son had no way of explaining the injuries because of his mental handicap. Mays, who was arrested Thursday, told deputies he didn't know how the resident got the injuries, but they were likely from the resident's roommate. He also said the resident called him "stupid friend." The case is not the first of its kind for the center. Deputies have been dispatched to the campus at least five times since 2002 for reported batteries and have worked with DCF on at least 26 other cases since 2001. Mays was taken to the Lake County Jail and booked on a charge for abusing a disabled person. He has since bonded out. ericarodriguez@... or Copyright © 2012, Orlando Sentinel Imported: Apr 21 2012 3:15AMIndexed: Apr 21 2012 3:17AM -----------------------------------------------------------
