Many of us have had stents installed during ERCPs, sometimes changing them every six weeks (and sometimes never again). My first (and last, I hope) stent was in 2001. It apparently worked very well.

Here's a description of the procedure - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ERCP

Has any one in the group had the procedure where they install a shunt in the bile duct?

Dawn: I have had one stent and several ballon treatments over the last

year. Have not had any problems with any. Recovery time has been 2 3

hours and most of the time have been able to walk out of the hospital

when the procesure was complited. I only had to have a driver to take

me home.

Good luck and our thoughts will be with you

Dawn.

My situation is like Arne's. I had a stent

in 2005, it was removed and that is the last I heard of it. I am asymptomatic

since.

Dawn,

I went through my first stenting procedure about 3 weeks ago. I am to go back in another 3 weeks for replacement and hopefully upgrade to a larger diameter. I have/had a dominant stricture in the hilar region of my ducts into which they placed two 7 French stents. The plan is for me to do this every 6-8 weeks until the first of the year. The stents must be replaced to wear long term because they get clogged over time.

I have had some mild ongoing pancreatic pain since stent placement. I have had acute pancreatitis many times over the last 20 years, but not so much over the last several years. I suspect that the two stents are transiently putting pressure on the duct opening of my pancreas. I have previously had pancreatic sphincterotomy. So far, pain has not been acute, but I am worried about acute pancreatitis after the next procedure since I most likely already have mild inflammation.

As far as recovery time, I was up and about the same day, but like I said, did have some mild pain. It is usually worse at night and I have been sleeping propped up. I also had a biopsy for cancer. Have been told by Dr. Gores that the results were "consistent with inflammation", but that he wanted to repeat the cancer screening, which is a little worrisome.

As to your question about iron level improvement...don't really know.

Has any one in the group had the proceedure where they install a shunt in the bile duct? They want to do this to my brother to relieve pressure. I thought he had this done but was wrong, they did a biopsy instead.

I guess we would like to know what the recovery time, improvement and quality of life after. Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos.

Dawn,

Talking with your brother. He seem to think the shunt they were talking about was permanent. Does anyone in the group have such a thing or is he mistaken? He was also concerned with it causing a foggy mind as a side effect.

Glenn is in Canada and I just learned he has appointments with specialists in the morning who are pushing to do this soon .Appreciate all info. This is a very generous group. Bless you all.

Ian,

I don't know if it is permanent or not.

They talked about doing a procedure that is kind of new. He is single, no kids so I guess they thought he would make a good candidate? Evidently it puts unfiltered blood to the heart and brain? He was under the impression they were going to do this procedure while they did the biopsy. I am thankful the Dr. decided he was not in the right hospital to do that kind of operation. Thanks Ian. I was trying to get a hold of him this morning but no luck.

Quantell's stent is probably going to be permanent. He's had one for

more than 7 years. It's replaced every three months in an IR procedure

Part of it is external. I insert gentamycin and colymicin directly into

it every night.
