False-Positive Alcohol Test

My husband just finished up his Transplant Eval at University

Hospital of Cleveland. His case was being presented last night by

the committee to see if he would be listed. Our social worker called

yesterday morning to tell him the results of his alcohol test

came back positive. WHAT THE HECK....are you kidding me.

actually laughed a little because this guy has not touched a drop of

alcohol, for that fact even sniffed a touch of alcohol since he was

diagnosed which will be 3 yeras in June. was never a big

drinker but he would enjoy a couple here or there but when he heard

of his diagnosis....he STOPPED completely.

My question is what could cause this positive reading? The Social

Worker mentioned mouthwash (nope), cough syrup (nope), salad dressing

(I heard of this for certain drug testing but never a screening for

alcohol??). said to the SW " I know you probably hear this all

the time from people, but I swear to you that I have NOT had a

drink since my diagnosis " . He is really bothered by this. The SW

told him not to worry, that's it's a false-positive reading and they

may just ask him to take the test again.

Anyone experience this? I'm just wondering what could cause these

results?

Thanks for your time!

,

I also saw a program on television once where

they told that chocolates (or other sweets) with a filling which contains alcohol

can cause (short term) false readings.

Are you sure it was the blood test or was it the urine test. I have a

good friend who is a nurse too and does not drink at all who had a

urine test come back positive for alcohol, she did some research and

there was hundreds of reasons that it would have come back positive,

including using the hand sanitizer that we use at the hosp!

The false positive from glucose that *I* heard about was from a urine.
