This is a very important thread. We all must take responsbility for our

own medications when we can. If we are taking a new medication that we

are not familiar with, it is our responsibility to look it up. If we

don't feel well taking it, we need to check the side effects. But we

can't get too paranoid and fearful either. In my neighborhood in NYC,

all the big chains are buying and pushing out the Mom and Pop

pharmacies. They are using interns and beginners. I get delivery here

twice a day. My mom's pharmacy doesn't even deliver so she has to use a

chain much further away so they deliver. I have a bad cold this week and

I needed a prescription and nasal spray and decided I should have some

Robitussin in the house. It is the safest cough medicine. So far I don't

need it but it is important to have certain things when we get this

normal everyday colds. I have not had a problem with Rite Aid yet so I

can't complain. When I was in the hospital with pneumonia before

totally crashing and becoming disabled, I was brought my regular

medication that I take every day. I was very aware of what it looked

like and the dosage, etc. There was one pill that I never saw before

and I refused to take it. The nurse tried to push me into taking it and

I told her it was not my medication. I told her not only am I quite

familiar with it but it was the wrong color. She then told me I must

take generic and his was brand and that was probably why. I informed

her that this particular pill does not come in generic form. After a

small argument she took it away. She obviously checked it because when

she came back she thanked me for being so aware because it was not my

pill and I don't know what it was but it could have been a very bad

error. Also, alot of people don't realize that you can't take vitamins

with certain heart medication. That is a serious problem because in

that case vitamins can hurt you.

Thank you for your very informative letter.

I agree!! We MUST always check our medicines, even in a hospital setting - if

we're awake enough to do so.
