I've asked Fred to contribute to the depression thread, as he's

struggled with this issue for a few decades, yet has recently found

1600 mgs. per day of over-the-counter SAM-e to be a healthy, safe, and

beneficial treatment for depression (albeit a tad expensive). SAM-e is

short for s-adenosylmethionineases, a

naturally occurring compound - which - hello! people with liver disease

have a less than minimal supply of. I'm sure Fred will be posting

shortly, but I couldn't help but jump in.

Fred purchases NatureMade SAM-e (considered to be the "gold standard")

at drugstore.com. Info on this brand can be found at

http://naturemade.com/ProductDatabase/prd_prod.asp?productid=71

SAM-e is considered to be only one of two over-the-counter supplements

that has research behind its proven effectiveness against depression.

Fish oil is the other.

Just type "SAM-e" into your browser, and numerous pages will come up.

One page with substantive info is:

http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.same.html. (I'm sure Dave

can do better, though!)

A side note and one that Dave and other research types may find

fascinating: Since Fred's been taking the high dose SAM-e, his mood has

not only improved, but so have his bowels! (Perhaps it's the SAM-e, as

much or more than the VSL #3 probiotics, that have kept his UC in

check.) He's less depressed, less anxious, and that in turn affects the

"gut" environment.

WOF WOF (means "2nd Wife Of Fred, aka FDog), PSC 03/04, UC 03/06.

SAM-e, 03/08.
