Hi Martha -

's GI told him he could take Tylenol 500 mg one twice a day (he weighs 128). He is working at a dog breeder/kennel (she breeds German Shepherds and Rottweilers - BIG DOGS) and is having significant foot pain (he has JRA). I spoke to his Rheumatologist Friday and she said, "With his liver disease we are so limited in what we can give him". In past when he had severe pain, she prescribed 1/2 tab of Norco (Hydrocodone 10mg/acetaminophen 325) twice a day. The thought was that it was safer to take a small amount of a narcotic than larger doses of Tylenol. His GI is very opposed to NSAIDS for both the liver and the havoc it can play with bowels and UC.

Good luck.

When I was first diagnosed with PSC, my hepatalogist recommended tylenol - at the "normal" bottle dosage. I take ibuprofen, however, since it's processed by the kideys (and tylenol does nothing for me). My UC is not active, and nsaids have never bothered me, though. Your sons Dr. has his history, and we don't (and very few of us are physicians) - you really need to talk to his Dr.

Hi Joanne,Thanks for the information, I'll speak to his GI about a prescription. Matt is scheduled for lab work on Monday and I didn't want to give him anything that would affect that. Is there something non prescription, such as aspirin, that he could use? Thanks, and Happy Mother's day,Martha H(San , mom of Matt, 21, PSC/UC 6/07Copper wrote: Hi Martha - 's GI told him he could take Tylenol 500 mg one twice a day (he weighs 128). Arne –

Great response – I wrote back before

I read this! Why I write before reading all the email… makes

me crazy. And I forgot to delete prior messages – sorry!

I’m working on Silent Auction totals

from ville – it is exciting, although I have a bit more to do to reconcile

our total. Looking at the bid sheets and being reminded of how nice the

auction items were is fun.

You are probably busy this weekend, but I’m

looking forward to seeing more pictures from ville. Your collage last

week was fun.

Happy Mother’s Day! If it were

me (and I’m sure you’ve seen from this board that many people’s

doctors have varying views on use of NSAID – Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc,

Tylenol – acetaminophen, and aspirin), a dose of aspirin would be

OK. I’m really conservative and believe in protecting the liver and

kidneys… so I would be really careful if taking any of the above

medications on an on-going basis or intermittently at a higher dose. That

is why for ’s chronic pain from JRA his GI gave him the limit of one

Tylenol twice a day.

For those who don’t know, I’m

a nurse practitioner and would want you to speak with your doctor about any

pain medicine recommendations for you. Yet, from reading past postings, I

would highly encourage people to always ask/remind their doctor (especially if

in the emergency department or your dentist or on-call doctor) that you have

PSC and if you have UC or Crohn’s. And if you need any pain

medicines more than “once in a blue moon” – I‘d really

talk with the doctor about how to avoid burdening your liver and kidneys with too

much NSAID and Tylenol. Sometimes for severe or chronic pain using low

dose narcotics is safer and has less impact on your liver.

By the way… I was at the

Northern California PSC support group meeting yesterday with Dr. Bowlus from

UCD. I talked about Chicago conference to the group. A mid-20’s woman was there –

I told , as I am hoping will come to Chicago next May. Do you

think Matt might be interested?

Take care.
