My Celiac son had this two front teeth chip in half moon shapes, same

side each tooth from one hit of this mouth (strange to us it was not

the center of the two teeth). I kept looking at this thinking

something is wrong with his teeth to have chipped in this fashion.

I took him to the dentist to have them looked at and filed down, he

was just two. Dentist never said anything about mineral difficencies etc.

It wasn't until I was told by our pediatrician to read up on Celiac

disease that I saw the tooth and CD link. Pediatrician acknowledges

it, one GI never says much, the dentist doesn't say anything either

with regards to teeth and CD.

My son has a cavity in his 2 yr molar, I think this is from weakened

enamel. None of my other kids have had a cavity. (My sister did at a

young age and my father's teeth are horrible -- but since I do not

have the gene they won't get tested.)

I hope his permanent teeth won't be damaged, but since teeth are

forming long before they errupt, I don't hold out much hope. Only

time will tell.

I asked my dentist why I seem to go to root canal stage so quickly. He

told me some people just have thin enamel. My son has celiac and DH so

I have heard of celiacs having enamel problems, I frankly was shocked.

I had blood test done and my DR. said all was negitive. When I told my

husband we looked over alot of things and relized so many signs were

there. Now because we have gone GF for my son the question is, do I

gluten myself for the test. And why would I. I used to brush and floss

as instructed but it never seemed enough. I have had over 5 root canals

and ended up having to pull 3 after the root canals.

Since I have gone gluten free it seems to have slowed down some. But

you can imagine 43 years of damage is not going to change overnight.

Eating correctly seems to take care of the problem in the long run. Not

all Celiacs have enamel problems.

PS I did tell my Dentist about Celiac and he is going to pass on

information and ref. material to anyone that has a similar problem
