I am much more concern of what is happening here. When it's to warn us of something dangerous...I think it doesn't matter if it's anonymous or not....there was link that was supporting all the infos. Those people providing this supposedly this "non sense treatment" needs to be stopped. This is not right at all for those children. This is disgusting. This is children we are talking about....and desperate parents that "people" are taking advantage of....We need to get FDA much more involve on this crazy issue.Nathalie

I am always concerned by writers who wish to remain anonymous. Equally as concerning to me are editorials which choose to blast one perspective without offering any qualitative alternate options for the readers. As harsh as bleach enemas sound, I am not sure this writer is qualified to be making any kind of judgment call on such issues. Perhaps if I knew who the author was I would be a little more inclined to take their information seriously. Without that citation this info is relatively useless and down right defaming. I am all for freedom of information I just tend to be a little more scrutinizing about where I get that information from.

Fw: Parents Giving Their Children Bleach Enemas - no joke ?

To Whom It May Concern

I am a local human rights advocate currently living in South Florida . Over the

last several years, I have been following a variety of abuses and disturbing trends in the field of autism.

The trends that I am speaking of range from the opening of a clinic in Tamarac dedicated to use of chemical castration via a drug called Lupron as an "autism treatment" (see http://www.sun-sentinel.com/health/sns-health-autism-drug-treatment,0,5458436.story

for some somewhat overly credulous coverage) to the widespread use of an industrial chelator known as OSR#1 as an "antioxidant vitamin supplement" and autism treatment (e.g. see http://www.sun-sentinel.com/health/chi-autism-chemicaljan17,0,4810794.story ), with a list of distributors which includes a board member of the Broward county autism society.

There have also been a number of such "fads" which have not received such news coverage (most notably including helminthic "therapy" -- which involves illegally importing pig whipworm eggs so that you can deliberately infest your child with porcine intestinal parasites -- and fecal transplants, which are exactly what they sound like). The latest, however, is especially disturbing -- the use of an industrial bleaching agent which has been rebranded as a "Miracle Mineral Solution".

In other words, parents are now making their autistic kids drink bleach and following this up with bleach baths and bleach enemas. Seriously. Bleach enemas.

As I say in the subject line -- no, I'm not joking. I sincerely wish I was.

There are existing FDA warnings about this "miraculous" treatment -- see http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm220747.htm , http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/ucm152422.htm . Quite frankly, they are fairly unambiguous, and there is a very informative Wikipedia page on this scam ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_Mineral_Solution ).

Despite this, there will be a seminar/conference on this "treatment" tomorrow at the tt Miami Dadeland (near the Dadeland Mall), entitled "Recovering from Autism

MMS Protocol - The truth behind the myth" ("MMS" is short for "Miracle Mineral Solution" or "Supplement"). You can see the description at http://www.gmautismfoundation.org/event-detail.php?id=7 .

One of the more bizarre angles this matter has taken has to do with the speaker's qualifications -- Ms. is a "bishop" of the Genesis II Church of Healing ( http://genesis2church.org/index.php

), a "church" set up explicitly for the purpose of promoting bleach therapy. Qualifications as either a "health minister" of the "church" or

as a "D.MMS." (that's "Doctor of Miracle Mineral Solution") can be obtained from the church via attending a seminar ( http://genesis2church.org/mms-training-seminars.html ).

You can see her promoting her "treatment" at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/mms-autism-webinar , and her protocol is detailed in both English and Spanish at http://www.autismo2.com/mms.html . The slides for one of her recent presentations are at http://www.autismo2.com/PDF/MMS_English.pdf .

Other people promoting this and/or jumping on the bleach bandwagon can be found at http://www.mmsautism.com/ and

, among other places.

There's decent blog coverage of this "treatment" at http://thinkingautismguide.blogspot.com/2012/06/dangerous-interventions-mms-and-autism.html , http://autismum.com/2012/05/30/re-uk-4-years-old-46-pounds/ , http://autismum.com/2012/06/06/mms-for-autism-a-reply/ , http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2012/05/25/selling-bleach-as-a-cure-for-autism/ , http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2012/06/11/miracle-mineral-solution-mms-and-autism-apologists-strike-back/ , and http://leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk/2012/06/09/mms-the-apologists-step-in/ (among other places).

You can also find a petition of interest at http://www.change.org/petitions/no-bleach-enemas-to-cure-autism-in-children . The MMS supporters have started a rather hilarious and juvenile counter-petition at http://www.change.org/petitions/emily-willingham-stop-telling-people-that-mms-is-bleach-because-it-is-not .

The concept of trying to "bleach the autism away" is disgusting and abusive. Quite simply, these people need to be stopped.

Sincerely,

A Worried Advocate

Thanks for the info. I am very interested in all kinds of " autism treatment". As a teacher in Broward I like to know what goes on in my community. Some of these treatments are clearly dangerous.
