Guest guest
The ma'am thing.. that's genetic you know, at least where you're from.. LOL.. I think that is the best thing I've ever heard. Southern raised children are taught to respect their elders.. and I've never heard anything (in public) except Yes Sir, No Sir, or Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am when a Southern child is asked a question that requires a yes or no answer.. An Aunt of a friend of mine, while growing up, when one of we kids would say "huh?".. she'd reply "Huh, hell.. you're old enough to say ma'am?".. Up here in the Nawthin' States (I love southern accents I truly do) get "huh", "wassup", "hey", "hey dude", "dude wassup wid dat"... and it's like.. what language are you speaking son cause I don't understand a word you're saying. [i even do that to the kids in the game (Runescape) that I play, then they ask me if it's a requirement to type proper words in English to be a moderator.. I tell them that it isn't, but it sure helps other people understand what you are saying. LOL] I seriously think that I would drop into a dead faint if I ever had a child, teen or young adult answer a question with "Yes Ma'am" up here. It's great that the vets & active duty guys take such good care with you too.. HUGS |)onna being around vets - with and without obvious diabilities, seniors, wtc - I know that they accept disabilities - the kids at 's other school accepted me - they even accepted the fact that she is my sister and she is black and I am white - I have never seen color or religion - having talked to my heart sisters about working with the vets I knew my cane (at the time) would not be an obstacle - I have been a "little sister" since I was 16 - getting called "Ma'am" is the hard part - since I have a 2 year old granddaughter I always smile - cock my head - and waggle my fingers at the little ones - they think it is the funniest thing since sliced bread  when I go to 's shop several active duty come on their lunch hour - they always make sure I get a chair and they are gentle when they hug me - they accept my gimpy walk and fussy head- 's son graduates in May - I met him 8 years ago at Red Cross - he asked to come to lunch with us in December - one of the highest compliments I have ever had - when I call for and get - I touch base with hime - the understanding is unless you are selling drugs or knocking over the 7 -11 or have a batch of meth in the back yard - whatever you say is confidential -  family joke is in early 2008 I went home from the doctor at the clinic - it was closest to to Lawton High where was - as I made the left turn the park behind the building with the school security had a beat out going on - I checked to see if it was - it wasn't - I stoped at the next strip mall - went in and called LPD - they blew me off - LHS is a closed campus - so I went home still seething - I call and told her A) I didn't see or I would have broken that little fiasco up and march his happy a$%^^ into the car and made him call Dad and mom as we went to LHS principal's office and waited for them - in the mean time he was going to get a few wel chosen words  we always told if he could not get Mom or Dad - call me - we always told hime - id you aren't supposed to be doing it - Anne will walk in on it  is a reading specialist and a mom - I let her deal with it - LPD ignoring me - that fried my shorts  God, grant me the strength of eagles wings, the faith and courage to fly to new heights, and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there. I think parents should consider, and teach their little ones as well, that it's much better to ask, than to stare. Remember your mother (well maybe your mother didn't, but mine did) would say.. Don't stare, it's not nice/polite! And then you'd be embarrassed not only for being curious, but for being scolded in public.. even if the scold was a whisper. I think that there would be much more acceptance, and much less pretending that we didn't exist, if children were permitted, or even encouraged to question the reason for us using a scooter. They'd soon come to realize (and carry into adulthood) that the scooter only makes us shorter, not less human or intelligent. But that's just me and my two cents.. HUGS |)onna It really is. I love the way kids just naturally have such curiosity. One little boy said to me (he was about four, and was walking), "Gee! What happened to YOU? You do not look that old!" His mother was a bit alarmed, but I explained it to him briefly, and assured the mother that I thought that asking me a reasonable question was not rude. She did appear greatly relieved! (Donna)  Ahhhhh... tax time. Is that why we are hearing from you today, Donna? lol When I am shopping it is so annoying when people congregate right in the way where I can't get through. It's super aggravating when they turn and look at me there in my electric scooter and then turn back to their conversation. I've hit on a solution that works for me every time. I just start going forward saying "I can never get these things to stop -- I hope I don't HIT anyone!!" I say it loudly and with a smile and they do move. Usually in a hurry:) hugs  Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Our local one even had a cart that when you tried to turn right with it.. would died instantly!!.. and they didn't even mark it out of order... If we get me out of the house to actually hit a Wal-Mart.. we go at really strange hours.. sometimes after midnight and into the wee-hours of the morning.. otherwise, if we go at peak or even not-so peak hours.. by the time we get out of that place I'm ready to kill something! Between the small areas in the clothing department (and I HAVE to hit the clearance racks) that a cart doesn't fit through.. and the rude people (not all are rude, but the ones that are, take on all of the rudeness that would be inside the non-rude plus all the indifferent people combined!).. I've actually had people push their cart over to the side where I am (and I stay as close to the side of the aisle as I can with the cart), directly in front of me.. park their cart right there.. and walk away!!!.. now I've got to try and back up in a crowded aisle so that I can swing that cart out into a busy stream of traffic in the aisle to get around the parked cart.. Really wish I could get up and run after them and grab them by their itty bitty necks.. One of these days, if isn't standing close by.. I WILL become very vocal (he'd be totally embarrassed and die right on the spot if I did that with him there) and let the rude person know exactly how rude they are.. Other times I've run into extremely nice and helpful people.. One gentleman even stood in the center of the end of the aisle and blocked traffic so that I could get out of the aisle and around the corner to the next.. right in the middle of Christmas rush too.. LOL.. I'll never forget that man.. but I will also never forget the asshole (sorry about the language)... who standing directly behind me and my cart.. said loudly enough.. "People of Wal-Mart" that everyone around us could hear.. I expect to one day open one of those emails and find a picture of my butt in a cart in that check out line... They redesigned or redecorated the back of the store ladies room.. and with the new design, even in my power chair, that isn't but maybe 24 inches wide.. I'm going to be very hard pressed to get through between the sinks and the stalls doors to get to the handicapped stall.. without getting wedged between or running over someone.. Where was their brain in that design??? But, EVEN WORSE than Wal-Mart is Burlington Coat Factory -- not inside a super mall type deal, where you can get a chair from the mall itself if you don't have one of your own -- needed an overcoat for winter, for working in the parking lot, on funeral days.. Well the only place I could think of that would handle one of those fancy men's dress coats (double breasted, some type of wool blend, heavy to be warm, not just for looks type coats) was Burlington Coat Factory... I thought it was at the Mall, but it wasn't. They must have moved out into a building all their own (they bought an out of business department store).. We get there.. I didn't bring my wheelchair.. goes inside to get theirs.. only to find they don't have one.. none.. nothing.. zero.. zilch.. They have handicapped parking spaces out the wazoo.. but NOTHING to assist a handicapped person into and around their store.. Oh.. but you're more than welcome to bring your own!!! (that's what I was told).. and then if you call them on the phone, they'll even send an employee out to assist you get into your chair and even push you around the store and then get you back into your vehicle and on your way.. Ummmmm.... If I'm going to pay you $200 or more for a men's winter dress overcoat.. I certainly expect to be able to SHOP for that coat.. not having to find a seat in the shoe department, while the man runs back and forth from the clothing rack.. saying.. what do you think of this one.. what about this one.. and on and on.. I was SOOO livid by the time I left that store.. I told them that I was going to post everywhere I could find on the internet that they were not handicapped accessible let alone handicapped oriented or friendly.. Can you tell that I'm working very hard to avoid filing my income tax online??? LOL.. Now I wonder if Giant Eagle, around here, would do something like that for me.. It would be much better for to just drop in, pick up & pay for the stuff I've called in than him having to grab a cart and run through the store, trying to remember all the stuff he's supposed to be picking up on his way home.. Would save a TON of time as well. Would definitely have done some good for us these past few weeks, with him not leaving the funeral home until sometimes after 7 in the evening (some days 12 1/2 hours in).. so dinner isn't appearing before 9 p.m... and then it's TV dinners if it's 9.. would be much later if he starts from scratch type meals.. THANK YOU soooo much for this idea.. I know that there are a few stores around the city that offered that type of service, but via online shopping type thing.. Somehow you go through a "virtual store" online, check off what you want & quantity.. they prepare the order in-store, an have it waiting for you to pick up.. not sure either of the ones we use have that service available.. but I will be calling each of the stores, and talking to someone about it.. Maybe, just maybe the stores aren't as inconsiderate as the impression that they give..
