Guest guest
-----Original Message----- Sulfasalazine 2000 mg/day Arne, ,___ Rather delicate question here….. do you think the Sulfasalazine is still working for you? I take 3000mg (6-500mg) a day and honestly been thinking about seeing doctor and changing to something else. I’ve been on it for well over 15 years and it’s just not working. I’ve also toyed with the idea of changing how I took it, but so far just talked about it. I take 3 in a.m. 3 at night, but read some people take it 4 times a day. Sounds like more work for me, but probably should at least try that as nothing is working right now. I’ve even tried the newer drug forgot it’s name starts with an L, big mistake, made me cramp up something terrible. How do you take your 2000mg? Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight.... Guest guest
I think it's working fine, based on bathroom habits and annual colonoscopy. I did ask my GI at my last visit if one of the newer 5ASA drugs should be considered. His response was, if it's working for me, and I have no side effects from it, don't switch. Sulfasalazine is an old, but time-tested med, and he didn't think the newer ones are as effective (he's old school, and retires next year, though). He only prescribes the newer 5ASA meds for people who react with the sulfa complex in sulfasalazine. I did take Pentasa for a year about 20 years ago. It did NOT work as well as sulfasalazine, even at elevated doses. I had to supplement with Cortenemas to keep things in check. When I went back to sulfasalazine, I took 3000 mg/day for a couple of months until I got back to (my) normal. I take 500 mg with each meal (breakfast, lunch, supper) and a final 500 mg before bedtime. I've done this for most of the 30+ years since UC diagnosis. My GI says 2 tablets twice a day is adequate. I've tried that, but I don't think it's as effective (for me) as spreading it out throughout the day. I keep a bottle at work, small container in each car, bike bag, pillbox in my pocket, etc. to make sure I always have it available. I doubt if I miss one dose a month.
