New Warning on College Drinking

No, it's not just alcohol that's a concern! An article in the Journal of Attention Disorders shows a link between symptoms of ADHD in college students and beverages containing sodium benzoate. This common preservative is often used in energy drinks, diet sodas, and "fruit" drinks. (See the 2012 research abstract.)

It's also been reported that sodium benzoate in soft drinks may react with added vitamin C, creating benzene, a cancer-causing substance. In addition to the college study, a research article in Lancet showed an association between additives and increased hyperactivity in toddlers and young children; those additives included the preservative sodium benzoate.
