Guest guest
Read somewhere not too long ago that somebody did a study and found that the Shattered Dreams program had zero effect. Guest guest
I think we have to look at what's the best use of our time and money. It costs money and lots of time to put on a Shattered Dreams demonstration. I have done several of them over the years. One has to look at the cost/benefit ratio I think. Looking back at my youth, I was around wrecks all the time since I started in the ambulance business early. What I saw didn't affect my wild driving habits one bit. Age was the only thing that made me a safer driver, and luck is what kept me alive. I wish I knew the magic potion that would change kids' behaviors, but I don't. Guest guest
Gene I was an EMT-A at 16 in New Jersey, I could not drive at the time until I was 17 (I know great system). When I started driving I never wore a seat belt. By then I had made 50 good wrecks and countless of those were full or partial ejections. why? I was 17 and invincible. I got smart at 19 or so (seatbelt wise) Louis N. Molino, Sr., CET FF/NREMT-B/FSI/EMSI Freelance Consultant/Trainer/Author/Journalist/Fire Protection Consultant LNMolino@... Guest guest
Many schools have stopped the Shattered Dreams programs. With all the problems most HS students are facing, motor-vehicle injury prevention takes a back seat. - even though it is the *1 killer. After teaching HS for 6 years, I can tell you what's on the average kids' mind is problematic to say the least. A number of kids in my HS are occupied with finding a safe place to sleep at night and getting a meal outside of school. A senior in my second year program lost 20 lbs. over the summer because his mother died, and no one was there to help. We're fattening him up. When I ask my HS EMT and Health Science students to do injury/illness prevention projects of their own choice, topics like preventing STDs, pregnancy, date rape, gang violence, alcoholism, and drug abuse are prevalent. That's why Shattered Dreams needs to have a place. I've been involved in Shattered Dreams programs since 1999. In that time I've seen the wind taken out of the sails. The program needs an update. We must also remember, what we revere as medics, parents, and teachers is mostly complete crap to a teenager. That's why we need think about what is going to get the kids attention and apply it. Just ask the kids!!!! -MH ________________________________ From: texasems-l [texasems-l ] On Behalf Of wegandy1938@...
