My low functioning, sensory defensive 6th grade son is in a life-skills program at a middle school in Volusia county. Emotionally, intellectually, and socially he is at the 22 month range. They decided to have the kids rotate to different classes (there are 7 periods). The transitioning freaks him out, and he usually elopes several times per day. Up until a week or so ago, he was running out into the bus/ teacher parking lot, and getting into random unlocked cars (inbetween periods or even during class). We've had meetings to discuss how to eliminate the elopements. I told the 'team' my son has severe sensory issues, and it is the primary reason he is eloping. The school does not have a sensory room. It does not have a playground or any types of swings. One the first day of school, I walked into the classroom and it was the bleakest environment I have ever been

in. No toys, no comfy beanbags, nothing fun or friendly. My son is like a toddler, and to expect him to sit in a regular student desk all day, is asking the impossible. The O.T. finally brought in a few figit toys, and chewy jewelry. My question is what type of middle school environments do you all have in Brovard county?
