For enquiring minds, casbah (Arabic, meaning citadel) originally refers to a specific citadel in Algiers. The term has been used in a general way to refer to a walled city anywhere in North Africa, with crowded maze-like streets, lots of dead-ends, filled with houses and mosques and souks all jumbled together.

The Wikipedia article has some interesting details on how popular culture has used the term. Including the song by The Clash.
