Guest guest
If you can get the prescription you will get more for less money. The over the counter has 450 billion bacteria and the prescription has 900 billion. With the prescription you pay a co-pay and get a month supply. In the information packet it says it can be mixed with cold water or any cold non-carbonated beverage. It can also be mixed with cold foods such as ice cream, yogurt, or apple sauce. So no soft drink. I don't know if there are many flavors. Mine was just one kind. It actually tastes pretty good. I think it has an orange flavor or something. If you do get the prescription kind read back through some of the old messages here about how to order it. It's a little bet of a pain but worth it. Arman arman_shirin@... VSL #3 Question For those of you who take VSL #3 in the packet form can you tell me if the unflavored is truly unflavored and can not be tasted if mixed with a soft drink or juice? I got the okay from Todd’s GI that he could take it and I was going to order it online and see that there is a flavor packet or unflavored. I originally was just going to get the pill form (even though there are less bacteria numbers) because Todd hates any kind of powder…but if it truly doesn’t have a taste maybe he would be willing to try it. I also asked if the GI could give a prescription, but they wouldn’t do that they said you can just order online. Is there a difference getting a prescription? Thanks so much. Guest guest
It does have a taste, but not too extremely strong. I actually kind of like the flavored variety (although I wouldn't eat it for the seer pleasure of it!). Since the bacteria are similar to the bacteria they use in yogurt, it does taste a bit like yogurt, and I couldn't taste it at all when I mixed it with one of the little yogurt cups. Usually I just mix it with a little water and then chase it with some more water. athan

Guest guest
VSL#3 is awfully expensive. If you do have drug coverage, it's possible that they will cover the prescription strength version of VSL33 (called VSL#3 DS). My insurance also wouldn't cover the OTC version but I just finally managed to get the prescription strength covered, so it might be worthwhile to check If you need help figuring out how to get it covered you can call Sigma Tau's (manufacturer of VSL#3) reimbursement hotline at . They were very helpful to me. If that doesn't work out you could try one of the other probiotics that are available. I don't really know if they'd help or not.. my GI doctor did recommend them to me (flora Q specifically) so they may be of some help. The acidophilus you mention is a probiotic so it may be helpful. I have no real knowledge of the papaya enzyme or yeast, so I'll leave those to others who may know more! Hope that helps! athan

Guest guest
> For those of you who take VSL #3 in the packet form can you tell me if the unflavored is truly unflavored and can not be tasted if mixed with a soft drink or juice? My son (13) has taken VSL since he was dx Jan '07 (minus a couple months when he stopped, then restarted it). The first time he had it, we just mixed it w/ water; he spat it out like it was poison and said it has an " alien " taste, " like nothing (he's) ever had before on this earth " . A little lol to his dramatic expression aside, I don't think it tastes very good on its own. We tried mixing it in other liquids, but nothing worked well enough to cover it's Martian flavor. He takes it mixed with applesauce, pudding, yogurt, ice cream, and such. His favorite to mix it w/ is chocolate soy pudding - -he says he can't taste even a trace of it in that (better even than when mixed w/ milk pudding). I didn't know they came flavored --I'll have to ask our pharmacist about ordering it that way. Thanks for that heads up. >I got the okay from Todd's GI that he could take it and I was going to order it online and see that there is a flavor packet or unflavored. I originally was just going to get the pill form (even though there are less bacteria numbers) because Todd hates any kind of powder…but if it truly doesn't have a taste maybe he would be willing to try it. My husband takes the pill form of the probiotic 'Align'. It's much, muuuch less potent a dose. What strength is the pill form of VSL? Wyatt (my son) takes the Rx strength VSL (#3 D-S) -1x/dy. >I also asked if the GI could give a prescription, but they wouldn't do that they said you can just order online. Is there a difference getting a prescription? Wyatt's had a Rx for it since the beginning. The first 2 months, our insurance refused to cover it (it was the Rx strength, but they did not recognize it as an 'acceptable Rx' from their list. A call from Wyatt's Dr's office cleared that up for us nicely, though and it's been covered since and only costs the $30 copay now. It is very expensive out here (to buy from our pharmacy). Only 2 pharmacies out here get it and it was $250 at one, almost $300 at the other ('course that's when we were getting 2x/dy in a single month). That's as much as Wyatt's Pentasa if we didn't have an Rx for that --way too rich for our middle class pockets, would put a hole in that pocket w/o the Rx. I hope you either get a great price online or can get a Rx for it and have it covered, Joanne. Good luck! --Meghan, mom to 13yo Wyatt-psc, ibd, fap, ai hives, gerd
