REP. ARMANDO WALLE PASSES FIRST BILL IN TEXAS HOUSE

For Immediate Release

Thursday, April 16, 2009

HB 2113 will entitle fire fighters, police officers to 9/11 holiday

AUSTIN -- Today State Representative Walle (Houston) passed his

first bill in the Texas House of Representatives. House Bill 2113 will

entitle fire fighters and police officers to a paid holiday on September 11, in

remembrance of the bravery of the fire fighters and peace officers who lost

their lives on September 11, 2001, and in honor of the fire fighters and

officers who protect our communities every day.

" I am proud that the first bill I passed honors the daily sacrifices made

by fire fighters and police officers to keep our families safe, " said Rep.

Walle. " Both the Committee on Urban Affairs and the full Texas House

supported my efforts by passing the bill unanimously. "

House Bill 2113 entitles fire fighters and peace officers to a paid day

off from work on September 11, with the option of using a personal paid

vacation day or switching a paid holiday. The fire fighter or peace officer is

entitled the holiday only if their supervisor does not require them to work

that day to maintain minimum staffing necessary for public safety.

Now that it has passed the Texas House of Representatives, House Bill 2113

will be sent to the Texas Senate for consideration. " I look forward to

working with Senator Gallegos to get this bill through the Senate and

passed into law, " said Rep. Walle.

Representatives from the Houston Professional Firefighters Association,

the Houston Police Officers' Union, the Texas State Association of

Firefighters, the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas and Houston

Firefighters Local 341 registered their support for House Bill 2113 when it was

heard last month in the House Committee on Urban Affairs.

Rep. Walle represents House District 140, which includes portions

of unincorporated North County and the City of Houston, and serves

on the Urban Affairs and Human Services Committees. Rep. Walle encourages
