Guest guest
I am trying to figure out whether my itching is PSC related or just some other anomaly. I've been rather itchy lately. Couldn't sleep the other night. But the type of itchiness is strange. It's all over my body, but not constant. It sort of feels like something crawling on me, just touching the hairs, compelling me to scratch at it. But it moves all over in different places. For instance, I'll be laying there, and suddenly there's a spot behind my knee that itches. Get that. Then it's on my chest, then it's on my arm, then on my foot. You get the idea. It just keeps moving all around my body, as opposed to my whole body being itchy constantly. Does this sound familiar? I keep checking out my eyes for any signs of jaundice, but am seeing nothing. So, I don't know what's going on. I'm supposedly in the early stages of PSC and am wondering if this itching is a sign that I'm really NOT in early stage PSC. Maybe things are getting worse faster, or maybe it's just due to dry skin or something. Any ideas? Thanks, Suzanna
Guest guest
Suzanna, That is exactly the way my PSC itching was before I started on the rifampin and now I also go to tanning about 8 minutes a day a couple times a week and it has helped a whole lot. My itching was always worse at night and it made me so I couldn't lay or sit still, I hated it, so I know what you mean. I have no jaundice either, I hope something works for you if it continues. Take care, Bettyann (SC)

Guest guest
That is exactly how my itchiness is. It started about three years ago (and was my first symptom) and I was only finally diagnosed with PSC two months ago. I have no jaundice either but am in early stages. I have good days with minimal itching and really bad days where I think I'm going to lose my mind. My husband gets upset because I break the skin on the bad days. It's worse at night and my feet usually get it worst. I've started trying to sit in the sun a couple times a week as someone else here suggested, and it seems to help some. I haven't pursued the rifampin or Questran (?) that others have. (SoCal)

Guest guest
Can someone talk to me about itching? In other word, try something sort benign, thenif that doesn't work try something more drastic, then more more drastic, then try ... etc, etc... For dry skin, go to CVS and just try some skin cream or scratch and see if you get flakes. Simple r/o for dry skin. I finally go my r/o this fall when I went to Mayo Clinic when they r/o. I did not have psc after all. Great news! Let me know how you make out!

Guest guest
Thanks so much, everyone, for the replies. Does anybody know what this means in terms of disease progression? I was just diagnosed this past fall 07, and they were indicating that I likely have many years of good health left, but maybe it's progressing much faster than they anticipated? My LFTs have been stable, but it's not like I've been getting checked every two weeks or anything. Does everything go downhill from here? Or is it more along the lines of the LFTs in that you can have it for ages before transplantation becomes an issue? I'm just trying to figure out if this is any indication of the disease progression or health of the liver. Should I expect jaundice next? Will the itchiness go away or am I stuck with it forever? What I mean is: does it get progressively worse or does it come and go with the wind (or diet or whatever)? I'm not sure what to think. I know, I'm overanalyzing, but I have this need to be prepared for whatever may happen (not an easy thing with this disease). And last, I'm having this dull throbbing ache deep in my left leg over the past 2 days. Like in the bones or something. Just a dull uncomfortable pain. Related or no? You all are so helpful. Thanks so much for your support. Suzanna

Guest guest
Suzanna, The symptoms are not a sure indication of the diseases progression or of what symptoms you will get next. We are all different and many experience different symptoms in different magnitudes and different orders. Some have sever itching when the disease is not very far advanced, but I suspect just about all have several sever symptoms just before requiring a transplant. Your symptoms could and likely get better before they get worse. Ian (52) PSC 89 Thanks so much, everyone, for the replies. Does anybody know what this means in terms of disease progression? Guest guest
Suzanna, Do have your leg checked out. I had a pain in my leg that felt like a insect bite, only I didn't remember being bit. It turn out to be a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). I'm now on blood thinners (since 2004). Ian (52) PSC 89 Thanks so much, everyone, for the replies. Guest guest
Suzanna - Ian's advice was excellent - your leg should be examined. DVT or an infection is a possibility.
