IT'S GETTING UGLY OUT THERE Making It Harder for Parents to Obtain Legal Exemptions At the 10th National Conference on Immunization and Health Coalitions in May 2012, Diane of the Immunization Action Coalition delivered a presentation entitled "Non-Medical Exemptions to School Mandates." links "exemptors" to disease and points the finger at states with easily granted exemptions. She outlines guidelines for recommended components of non-medical exemptions, which are finding their way into proposed legislation across the nation. States are advised to track exemption rates and evaluate the impact on vaccine-preventable diseases, and parents must: Have sincerely and firmly held beliefs. Receive state-approved counseling. Sign a detailed statement. Revisit the decision annually with a state-approved counselor. Sound familiar? Ask parents and advocates in California, New Jersey, Vermont, and Washington states. California and Washington recently passed new laws making it much more difficult to obtain a non-medical exemption to mandatory vaccination. Vermont mounted a successful response and its bill was voted down. All eyes are now on New Jersey, which has the most mandated vaccines for daycare and preschool admission and the second highest autism rate in the nation. WHO'S THE IMMUNIZATION ACTION COALITION? The CDC and Nine Vaccine Makers The Immunization Action Coalition receives funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Pharmacists Association, some "Individuals and Others," and the following nine pharmaceutical companies, which are responsible for the vast majority of the $30+ billion global vaccine business: Baxter Healthcare Corp. CSL Biotherapies GlaxoKline MedImmune, Inc. Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. Novartis Vaccines Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, Inc. Pfizer Inc. Sanofi Pasteur On their website, the IAC affirms its editorial independence from all funders. THE ANTIDOTE: THROW A BOOK PARTY! It's Time To Talk About Vaccination Choice Should my kids get vaccines?
