My oldest son is a freshman at Baylor University. This past weekend was family weekend so my dad and I traveled to Waco. There was a concert Thursday night. My son sat down with me prior to his concert and introduced me to two of his new friends. They were very both very respectable - shook my hand and introduced themselves. One of the young men engaged me in conversation about his week. Later that night at the reception and walking to the dorm one of the young men stayed with us. He and my son carried on conversation about the concert and arranging their dorm selection for next year. The reason for saying all of this my son tells me later that this young man has autism. I had known, but was very much in amazement and really encouraged.

1. My son, who grew up with autism in the house has befriended a young man and respects his differences. He is not his friend out of obligation or feeling bad for him. He truly thinks he is a really cool kid. He even wants him as a roommate next year.

2. This boy is a student at Baylor University where the acceptance rate is about 48%. He is also one of the five chosen into the percussion music program this year.

3. I find this as a great encouragement for all of our families that live with autism each and every day.

4. Also, kuddos to this young man and his family for rising above his disability and making it an ability.
