Guest guest
I seem to have this pain after I eat. starting on my right side, to my back and than on my left shoulder. The pain seems worse after I eat cheese or meats. Does anyone else relate this pain to after they eat? Subject: Re: Liver painTo: Date: Sunday, May 11, 2008, 4:30 PM ,The pain could have several causes, but the most likely, given yourPSC diagnosis, is cholangitis caused by a bile duct blockage. If youalso have fever or chills, go to the ER - you probably need to betreated for an infection. If it is just pain, it depends on theseverity. If it was severe I would seek some help (ERCP withballooning or other techniques to get the blockage removed), mildintermittent pain I would wait for it to pass and maybe ask my doctorfor meds to ease the pain.Since your pain seem to be constant, it may not resolve on its own. Ifyou can wait until tomorrow discuss it with your doctor's office then.Otherwise be prepared to do a lot of waiting in an ER.Tim R> ... Guest guest
, I am exactly the same. But just recently the pain started to extend into my right shoulder, too . And that is very true about it getting it worse after meals where my bowel gets most of the time irritated [very easily], specially like yourself, after eating cheese, meats and also vegtables. Although i mostly eat lean and has much insreasd Fish. And if once a while i feel like red meat i get it in 4 or 7% ground, only. And i love cheeses and that is my weakness and even that i only buy low fat, i mean only 8 or 13% [and 0% , this week], i still get affected. I also like to include vegetables., and although mostly steamed [except for lettuce, my pain does increase, too. I also like cofee [1-1/12], w/milk. And now, only with lactaid. I still take milk because of Osteoporosis and the protien. And until lately, i used to think that the pain source, as i have heard and read is due to the pressure excerted by the liver on the abdomen. But i think the rest of the mystery may had been discovered. And i do not know if your GI or other members GI's has suggested the same but my doctor's theory lately, is that because of the long time UC my colon has become So sensitive to stretching and pressure, i guess. And so too, the nerve ends that does send the pain signals. I do hope that other members would confirms that, may be. My pain has increased much for few months, now. It is always there, mild to moderate, but for months now, moderate to high or even to severe on few occasions. My GI has prescribed me a med for the pain, called Nortriptyline. It used to be an antidepressant and sometimes given for pain, for a couple of unrelated conditions. But it is only prescribed for pain now. I have been on it for about~2wks., now. I did feel some improvement, but the episodes of that intense pain, still happens. I have been postponing my ERCP appt but i will have to do it, soon. Also i do get cholanghitis, often. A blockage [Chills, nuasea, flu like symptoms----], sometimes. But if i get an infection, i would take Cipro if the fever is between 100-101d. BUt if it exceeds 101d or it is accompanied by more serious symptoms, then i would go to the ER. I am so glad you did write and , too. , As i have mentioned i do have the same classic route of the URQ pain, like yourself. Withregard to the diet, i still cannot do without the salad mix, bags. I don't think they are a good idea, specially for us. Oils, i only use olive, virgin or extra and canola, too. I have not used butter for years and i do not fry at all [i think even when i was healthy]. Also no salt in cooking because everything processed like breads, contains a lot of salt, you know. Also, no or low salt products [like cereals]. But once in a while i do break the rules. The worst thing for me was actually to quit chocolate and beer. But w/all of the precautions, i still get pain and lots of it! Guest guest
This sounds absolutely classic for gallbladder pain due to gallstones. In fact that kind of pain is what led to my diagnosis. I had gallstones due to the PSC and they were causing the pain and jaundice. When you eat a meal (especially if it's high fat) your gallbladder contracts in order to expel the bile so it can help to digest the fat. If the gallbladder is blocked by stones or sludge, it can lead to very severe pain. On the other hand, since you have PSC, it's possible that there's a blockage, but that it's cause by a stricture from PSC or by bacterial cholangitis. Based on you description (after eating, no mention of fever etc) my money would be on gallstones though. athan
